Well it seems like her Tony Nom streak is now over. I'm a little surprised, it always seemed to me like no matter what she did she'd get a nom.
But not for YF.
I'm just surprised. Not because the part is amazing, but because of who she is.
This is the first show she's done and NOT gotten a nom...
oh life
I don't think it's even her so much as the show..
That's too bad...for her anyways.
I wonder what she thinks...
She probably thinks, my part isn't that good, and my songs don't showcase how talented I am, I have gotten the chance to originate more parts than most people, and have been nominated three times winning one for my breakout role. She's probably not too heartbroken.
This is what she thinks:
"I hope SHREK is better than YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN."

She's been riding the crest of a very good wave and just because she got splashed it doesn't mean she's fallen off the board. She's a professional. She can handle it.
and she's probably happy for Chris? maybe?

Yup, she's amazing, but there's always Shrek. Maybe she'll be back with a nomination next year. Of course we all waited for Young Frankenstein and little Mermaid this year with baited breath as the new "Big Musicals" on Broadway (like it or not, they were expected to be this year's Broadway Blockbusters, even if they didn't live up to it). Shrek could go the same way - Big build up, great cast, Famous Movie, mediocre show.

Sutton got the lion's share of praise and gets to do lots of new things for her (an accent, yodelling). The characters around her do alot more scene-stealing. They are just showier roles and I bet she's fine with it. Heck, she'll be up for a Leading Actress Tony next year with songs written expressly for her voice. I doubt she's too upset about it personally. She's probably more concerned for the longevity of YF (even though she's leaving soon).
She's terrible in Young Frankenstein. No surprise there. I'm sure Shrek will let her showcase her talents in a much better way.

"She's probably more concerned for the longevity of YF (even though she's leaving soon)."
When is she supposed to be leaving? I'm asking because my mom and sister have yet to see YF and they both really love Sutton and she wants to see her before she leaves. I had heard July, but does anyone know for sure when she's leaving?
Sutton's thoughts:
"I don't really give a flying f**k, because I've worked as a leading lady on Broadway non-stop for the last six years, moreso than anyone else except I may be tied with Kelli O'Hara. I'm glad I'm not nominated cause Patti would just win it anyway, like she should have Sweeney year. I wonder if I'll be blonde again in Shrek. I wonder if Roger and I will fall off the platform tonight."
She's great in YF, it's just that Inga isn't really a show-off (no pun intended) role. Shrek will most likely be a better fit for her.
Sutton's real thougts:
"Do i get my check this week?"
Sutton's probably not too sad. She jumps from show to show, so she'll probably get a nom with the next one.
She starts rehearsals for SHREK in one month.
I think Sutton realizes she's not Audra McDonald and doesn't expect to be. And perhaps she also realizes that maybe she wasn't nominated for this show simply because others deserved it more this time. It's been known to happen.
But Andrea Martin's streak continues.
They and Megan were the only things I enjoyed in YOUNG FRANK.

It probably didn't help her chances that she announced her departure from YF before the awards season really got started. It appeared that she was bailing early on a bad show.

Yeah you know, when I met Sutton a month ago and we talked about some of her past roles, she seemed nostalgic for them and definitely not very excited that my first time seeing her was in YF. That's just the feeling I got from her tone, and what she said.
I think she realizes that, no matter what you think of the show, her part doesn't show her off at all. Her songs are completely forgettable, and that's a shame, because I didn't think that Sutton could ever sing a song that was forgettable (I am a big Sutton fan, as you can probably tell). Not to mention the direction of the show is such that she is essentially in the background of EVERY scene, usually holding some sort of appliance. And when she isn't doing that, she's making genitalia jokes. That said, I really doubt she was surprised with today's Tony announcements.
I hope that Shrek gives her a character, and music, that she deserves. The only thing i kept thinking during YF was "What a waste of talent!"
CurtainPullDown, you stole my thoughts!
Martin has been nominated/won the Tony (and Drama Desk) for every role that she has originated in a show!

She kind of expressed her thoughts about being part of an ensemble again, and well, here she is: Wonderful, but not a stand out, in a so-so show. And besides, Laura Benanti has this category sewed up.
I'm looking forward to seeing Sutton in Schreck, and hopefully to see her do another caberet gig. She remains one of my all time favorite performers, and the prityest voice I've ever heard.
I'm surprised that the show didn't at least get nominated on principle. It seems un-American to have the Tony ceremony without Sutton Foster belting her face off.
I think the fact they actually submitted their show as The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein did them in. People saw Brooks' name, remember the **** he's done this season, and YF lost nominations it deserved. Foster, not so much, but at least best score and Stroman's choreography. So much of the YF hate has to do with Brooks, and I'm pissed at the man too, he messed up a show that isn't half bad. Let the work speak for itself Mel! I am happy Andrea Martin and Christopher Fitzgerald were nominated. Great performances in iconic roles. Cloris Leachman must be pissed!

Is it so horrid to think that maybe Sutton ISN'T a selfish egomaniac who needs a Tony nomination to keep going? Her career is far from beginning to decline simply because she wasn't nominated.
When I first saw her perform in "Millie", the thought that went through my mind was "This is the woman who will star in musicals I will adore for the rest of my life." Our generation's Mary Martin or Ethel Merman. She has amazing talent and will be on Broadway until the very day she decides to leave. Frankly, with Broadway stars usually running here to Hollywood after one show, Broadway is incredibly lucky to still have her.
