What is your favorite Sweeney Todd cast recording and why? I am wanting to familiarize myself with the music and lyrics before seeing it off-Broadway.

while i truly love the OBC recording with Lansbury/Cariou...i have gotten to ABSOLUTELY insist on listening to New York Philharmonic - Patti LuPone/George Hearn concert version from 2000 performed in NYC...Patti is a perfect MRS. LOVETT and i think George Hearn sings Epiphany better than anyone i have ever heard it sung by!

This is kind of an old thread but could you elaborate? I'm seeing the show later this month and I'm curious what people think of Thom Sesma, Sally Ann Triplett, etc. From what I can find on the internet, Sesma has quite a bit of experience playing Sweeney and both have gushed about loving working with each other--seems like a recipe for great chemistry! (also feel free to let me know if I'm doing anything wrong on the technical side with posting and/ or replying, I'm brand new to this forum and am not terribly tech savvy).

I’ve been intending to post about the current cast for a week now — glad you inquired. My friend and I caught the show last Sunday and the production was fantastic — genuinely entertaining. The pie shop space was a great concept and the staging was crafted to work very well within it. The cast was top notch and all worked very well together.
As for Triplett/Sesma: They play off each other extremely well with a fresh energy. Triplett leading the parade. I thought her performance was superb. I said to my friend at intermission that Lansbury would approve. She made Lovett her own and infused her powerful vocals with a well-crafted acting performance. Her eccentric and charming spirit serves the comedy well while never losing touch with the serious elements. So glad I saw her.
Sesma: while he played off his co-star, I do feel he was the weakest link. He did not underserve the piece (no pun intended) but was just serviceable. That’s my opinion. He has a specific look about him that works but I did not pity nor loathe him. I wish I had seen one of the others.

Flowerlove stage5-- Thanks so much for the response! I'm even more excited to see it now; Mrs. Lovett is such a great character and I can't wait to see Triplett's spin on the role! One more question--did you happen to try the stage door afterwards? I know it can be hit or miss with off- Broadway shows. Thanks again!

I was at that same show last Sunday. We walked right to the 1 afterwards and Tripplee was on the platform with us wiping off her makeup

Barrow Street Theatre doesn’t have a stage door. As such, the only way for the cast to exit is through the lobby area. I’ve had lovely after-show experiences both times I’ve been to this theatre. Perhaps my favorite cast interaction was with Michael Urie after Buyer and Cellar. I also hung out after Sweeney in November when Carolee and Rothman were in the show. They couldn’t have been lovelier. It was Rothman’s first night in the show. The entire cast signed my window card and it is now matted and framed in my bedroom.

Yeah the first time I saw it there pretty much the entire cast was in the lobby after. And they’re also almost all out there at intermission mingling as well
