I apologize a million times if this has been posted already, but I know it's been discussed.
It seems like the Sweeney Todd musical movie has been announced on IMDB.com with Tim Burton as the director. Now I don't know completely if IMDB.com is always accurate, but I'm pretty excited.

IMDB is often not accurate, especially when things are in the very early stages. The imformation is generally submitted by users and is just speculation.
And yeah, this has been posted before.

Yeah, ANYONE can add info to IMDB. You, me, Joe Schmo in the bronx, an actor who hasn't gotten work in a while and puts his name in the cast list of an A-list movie to look good and legit and put it on his resume and when he goes to the casting call the casting director actually cast that movie and knows he didn't cast you and then you lose yet ANOTHER job...
Errmm...not from my own experience, of course.

Posted: 6/3/06 at 5:15pmIs anyone else a little uneasy about Johnny Depp as Sweeney? I'd like to see someone else because, personally, I think Depp is overrated.

Posted: 6/3/06 at 5:50pmIt's been talked about and talked about - if the man can sing, I bet he can act the hell out of it. I was watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night, and really, if I didn't know that was the same guy who played Jack Sparrow, I would NEVER have guessed. Depp does have range in these strange characters - he won't be what we're USED to as Sweeney, but really, that's ok. We already have a video of the old production as well as the concert version - and who knows if one day we'll have a video of Cerveris also - a new take on the character will be interesting. I'm willing to go with it - again, AS LONG AS HE CAN SING!

Posted: 6/3/06 at 6:09pmTwo Sundays ago Sondheim sounded pretty certain that this movie WAS going to be made with Burton directing and Depp starring. Unless it's been shelved again since then?

I wouldn't want to see Burton do Sweeney. Burton's obviously a great director, but Sweeney is dark and not in a comical way at all. Burton's films always have that pseudo-comic tone and Sweeney is just not meant to be told that way.
Maybe Bryan Singer (X-Men) or David Fincher (Seven) ?

No. I don't like the idea of either of those people.
I saw Sam Mendes, all the way.
Darrin Aronofsky would be a fun choice.

I think Burton could either do a very good job with the project, or screw it up horribly.
As for Johhny Depp, as someone said, he could act the hell out of the role, and if he can sing, cast him.

The role of Sweeney is not just for someone who sings. You MUST be a SINGER to do the role, and unless Depp has some hidden opera training, I don't want his weak attempts at this score.
Harsh? Maybe.
Remember Butler in Phantom? Yeah, I've burned him out of my memory too.
Good looks and great acting cannot solely carry a role like Sweeney.
Anywho, the real key is the casting of Mrs. Lovette. She's just as important as Sweeney, I think.
I would really like to see Streep in this role.
I have this weird premonition that they're gonna cast Chenoweth as Johanna.
I am thoroughly excited for the day casting comes out.

Sorry to dissapoint guys but Tim dropped this film a while ago. This was actually his second time trying to get a film version going, he had a failed attempt in 1994 as well, and honestly, I am glad. I am the biggest fan of Burton but I just dont think this is really up his alley.
Anyway, without any director or star attached, this film is dead in the water. And I, for one, couldnt be happier.

Posted: 6/7/06 at 10:39amI was a bit skeptical about Johnny Depp, IF it's valid info, but then I realized, it's not like it's a live performance where he has one chance to nail the score. He could sing everything 1000 times if he had to. I'm not worried about him acting it. and after a little thought, I'm not TERRIBLY worried about him singing it...

Sondheim said that the movie deal was in the negotiation stage -"which means the ice age" - it doesn't sound like it's progressing too quickly.
He mentioned that he's happy with John Logan's screenplay - or as happy as a man can be, who doesn't like movie musicals - it's got an interesting visual conceit, but he wouldn't say what it was, there would be no new material written but the final sequence would be reconfigured.
