Hopefully not--I don't want him to get any bad ideas. HA!
Have we seen tim's last couple of movies...he has bad ideas blowin out his ass.

I feel like they're going to deliver some songs as Sweeney's visions, similar to Chicago. I hope that the only song cut is Green Finch. The only version of that song that I've liked is Lauren Molina's version. I have good feelings about this movie. I mean Johnny Depp is terrific, I've enjoyed practically every movie he and Tim Burton have made.
I would like to see a very dark, scary version, but not gory.
I hope Burton does not get to carried away.
I love "Green Finch" and find it a haunting, beautiful song.
Besty Joslyn butchers it on the video, but that's not the song's fault.
If you remove it, you leave Johanna even more of a cardboard cut-out as a character. The rest of her material is so "surface," why would you cut the only song where we get to hear what she is thinking, feeling and wanting?
That would be a big mistake.
As an audience member, I personally wouldn't care one bit for the character of Johanna or her plight, if it weren't for this one song.

I agree. I really hope they leave "Green Finch". It gives Johanna some much-needed depth.
Unfortunately, I can see "Kiss Me" being turned into dialogue, which is such a shame - I love that song.
B12 is spot on.
Without "Green Finch..." Johanna can be seen as an insufferable dolt.
It may be the case that they cut it, but it would do a major diservice to the material.
The key though is to get a director who understands the character and an actress who can create audience sympathy.
I definitely can see some editing.
Most of "Kiss Me" (if not all) could easily be turned into dialogue.
Anthony's "Johanna" could be trimmed a bit.
Much of the Beggar Woman's musical material could be turned into dialogue... except for her scary little "Beadle-deadle-dumpling" thing. That's a throw-back to the nursery rhymes she used to sing to her child, and it needs to stay as a tie-in to her "past," once it's revealed.
Little Priest needs to stay, but could be cut down a tad... but that should easily work on film and bonds the two main characters so deliciously. AND... it's the moment of truth where the audience decides to "go on the ride" with these two and their dastardly future plans. If you cut "Priest" you deny the audience the chance to decide to ROOT for these two (just a bit) and what lies ahead. (I know that's twisted, but if everyone is only repulsed by them in the second half of the story, it will make it long and drawn-out until they get their "comeuppance." We have to ENJOY what their doing to mankind... just a bit... to care what happens to them in the end. And "Little Priest" is the catalyst for the audience to do just that.

Anthony's "Johanna" is one of the most beautiful songs in the show. I hope they leave it alone.
By the way, do we know for certain that the movie is going to be a musical at all? Maybe I just haven't wrapped my mind around the idea of Tim Burton making a musical. I haven't really read up on this.

SORRY, wrong post ...
News Flash (sort of):
An "inside source" tells me that the script is still being finalized, so the song list is not set yet, nor is any casting other than Depp. But I will hopefully be back soon with juicy info...
I hope that they keep "Green Finch". IMO it shows the only relationship that Johanna has because of the controlling Judge.

I don't think Burton will get too carried away with the effects and the core. I mean one of the few movies that people think he went overboard on the darkness was Batman Returns, but I saw it as a child and I enjoyed it and found nothing wrong with it. So, I think as long as there won't be like Friday the 13th style gore, and it'll be more a scary, dark thriller.
What I think(and alot of other people think it too) would be interesting is if while shooting like exterior scenes like maybe walking around Fleet Street or something like that is if they shot it at the actually Fleet Street, but knowing Burton and since the film is being shot at Pinewood Studios(where the Little Shop movie was shot) and they have a fairly big backlot, they will probably construct a realistic Fleet Street on the backlot. They should be able to since Burton did shot the first Batman there and they built Gotham City on that backlot. They would probably build what they want and then just add the rest in digitally.

GREEN FINCH would bring the entire film to a total stand still. There are other ways to express the characters' lonliness, particularly in the realm of film where to quote Ms. Normand, "one look" in close up can speak monologues.
There is also the possibility that Sondheim will write some new material. Just throwing that out there...
"GREEN FINCH would bring the entire film to a total stand still."
Well, not unless she just stood there and sang it (like the Broadway show), which would be a huge mistake.
The song could open up an opportunity to show us Johanna's quiet, daily life, as she lives it, once the judge goes off to court. We could see how she spends her days alone dreaming of the world outside. We could watch her reading books, brushing her hair, going quietly insane as she gazes out of her window at the people on the street and the birds in the air. Dreaming of what it must be like to have a life.
You can't do that in "just one look."
The Logan script that I read manages to make Johanna a complete character without the song; the ending also gives her a little mroe to do.
I understand your points B12, but even just reading your description: the song sounds slow and dull. Audiences won't go for 3 minutes of her brushing her hair and looking out the window. It reaks of of "cut" song for the dvd release!

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter did see the revival last fall (as did Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet when he was still in discussions to direct the film). Johnny Depp also saw the revival earlier this year and went backstage to visit Michael Cerveris and met some of the other company members.

To answer Play It Cool, it will be a musical.
Michael's right about the Johanna treatment. Works great in the script without the song. Sondheim will be involved, and at this point doesn't know what re-writing or new material is needed. (Although it will happen very soon!) Perhaps an end credit song; something for Oscar eligibility. Producers' love that and Steve would like to complete his bookends...

Michael Bennett, what is your general opinion of the script that you read, given the cut songs, etc. Also, can you imagine this script working in Burton's style?
I thought the script was extremely good. It made the material palpable and exciting for film, which is what any stage to screen transfer needs to do to work. Logan wasn't afraid to deviate from the Broadway play in instances when more cinematic "language" could be applied. Like I say, Johanna doesn't need a 4 minute song to necessarily convey her unhappy situation. Her entire world and mental status can be conveyed brilliantly and disturbingly in literally a matter of five camera shots.
The draft I read did not seem like a Tim Burton film. It felt more Michael Mann or I suppose Sam Mendes who was the original director attached. I'm sure Burton will change the script for his vision of the piece.
I loved that version too! I've just seen the recent (and I'm sure not last) one, but am not at liberty to talk details. It's still true to Logan, but Burton will be tweaking it some. Still great!
The one you read, Michael, was developed with Sam Mendes attached. I loved that version, too. Russell Crowe was their first choice...

I think they will cut green finch and linetbird, but I think they should just shorten some, and not fully cut any.
Yeah, but some of these songs with cuts will just make the flow even more stilted and less sound as a movie.
Don't forget: A picture is worth a thousand words (or lyrics)! And underscoring using the theme even though the song is cut has worked in other film adaptations. (Think "Henry Street" in Funny Girl)
I agree TomMonster.
That's why I say get rid of whole songs instead of akwardly forcing cuts on the ones that can't smoothly be cut.
