I don't get this. If you're saying that this thread isn't saying that Ms. Ferrris should have not been cast as Laura in this production that I don' t get it at all.
Of course the Times author has more association with a person with disabilities if his daughter has a disability and you don't.
Permission to write about his daughter with a disability? As if that should be hidden? Sorry, I have a disability and I'm through with it being hidden. If I want to audition for Laura in Glass Menagerie, give me that chance.
Oh, BTW, go see this production of The Glass Menagerie in limited engagement. You'll be glad you did.
"Of course the Times author has more association with a person with disabilities if his daughter has a disability and you don't."
It's not a competition and should not be viewed as such. Everyone has their own experiences to go off of.
"Permission to write about his daughter with a disability? As if that should be hidden? Sorry, I have a disability and I'm through with it being hidden. If I want to audition for Laura in Glass Menagerie, give me that chance. "
You have the right to be open about your disability, as does Mr. Genzlinger's daughter. You also have the right to not be open about it. Since this is Mr. Genzlinger writing, and not his daughter, it's impossible to know what her wishes are.
While you may be proud to be open about your disabilities, which is great for you, there are many, many others who choose not to be. Please don't say "hide" like it's something to be ashamed about. Everyone has the right to their privacy if they so wish.
