Dug up the press release!
After careful deliberation and an emergency late night meeting on March 31st, the Tony Award nominating committee has determined, due to extraordinary belting and dancing, that Jessie Mueller will be considered for Best Actress for her performance as Billie Bendix in NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT. Spence Jasperson III, a most distinguished nominator, said: “This is the first time in history we’ve felt it necessary to alter the rules in this way. After seeing Ms. Mueller’s first performance this past Friday, we realized it would betray our passionate love of rewarding only the best theatre to let her performance go unrecognized, despite not being technically eligible.”
Ms. Mueller could not be reached for comment, but word on the street is that the plaque has already been engraved with her name. The mothers of the children from MATILDA are said to be organizing a protest, but Jasperson said: “It’s really no use, Jessie is just too ‘s wonderful to be denied this year.”
