This is one of the most entertaining shows right here and now currently playing on Broadway. The show is fun, it’s well acted, it moves fast, it’s funny, it’s entertaining, it’s visually stimulating and I enjoyed myself. The audience leaves happy and satisfied. Bravo to all the cast and creators!
However, if you’re looking for something as innovative as the revival of Oklahoma, you won’t find it here. With that said, TOOTSIE is musical comedy theater at its best !!

Totally disagree. But hey, that’s what makes this Message Board go round

I was able to see both shows this week (by picking up last minute tickets to their opening nights - 6:30 curtains are my new favorite) and ended up enjoying both rather equally.
Both shows have assembled strong casts who are turning out performances calibrated perfectly to the show they're in.
I think the music for Tootsie was better, but I think I remember more from Beetlejuice even despite none being listed in the Playbill. In contrast, I know I loved Sarah Stiles's song but am struggling to recall any of it or any other song from Tootsie.
Beetlejuice wins for set, but that's also more in line with what the show asks it to do.
Though I appreciated the joke writing for Tootsie much more, I found myself laughing equally whole both shows were happening. Tootsie also has more to say, though I don't feel it's all earned or entirely sticks it's landing. Beetlejuice has much less to say but it knows that about itself as well.
Overall, for me, Tootsie was a B- show and Beetlejuice a C/C+. So based on this, reading the reviews jars me a little because the critics seem to have much stronger opinions on each piece than I did. I think Tootsie's earned more praise than it might deserve and Bettlejuice was hit mostly fairly, but with some extra snark to prove a point.
Either way, it was a fun way to spend part of the week and just makes me more excited to go back and revisit Hadestown again in June.
Robbie,
Don’t forget the NYT spread... for Hadestown as well. Pretty please.....
I agree that Tootsie is only a B- or C+ show that was reviewed as an A show. I enjoyed myself, but I think this would've been absolutely panned in a stronger season. It's certainly been overhyped on here.

Dame I read the Times online but I'll look for the spread for both Tootsie & Hadestown in my building's paper trash room later
Thank you baby.

That you so much Robbie. Thank you. Are all those from the times?
This was a fun show, made mediocre by Yazbeck's score. I can't believe it's getting the praise it is. The Prom was a much better musical comedy in my opinion. I'm pulling for The Prom or HadesTown.
This is a funny and delightful show. Well deserving of all its praise.

When has a musical with a forgettable and weak score won Best Musical?

Many. We can start with Kinky Boots. The show is a delight. Are you going to be challenging every time someone says they liked the show? Because it gets old.
I had a great time at Tootsie. And while the score wasn't great; it did serve the book and the show. I haven't laughed so hard in a show in a while. And I don't give a crap about the Tonys.

It may get old to you, but if someone wants to keep posting about the joys of T, he’s got every right to counter that Old or not.
And you think Kinky Boots has a forgettable and weak score? Apples and oranges, my friend.

To each his own. But there must be a way of expressing yourself about a show without digging at those that might have a different opinion than you. Tootsie opened last week to rave to good reviews. Many like it. It is going to do great on the road. Tony or no Tony.

No one is saying they don’t have the right, but it does get old. And I say this as someone who hasn’t seen the show, yet. I also don’t know what the purpose is.
I think Score is something thats pretty subjective, although a key factor in deciding whether you enjoy a musical or not. The above poster doesn't like the show because of the score. For the show being a musical, thats completely fair. However, some have liked the show and find the music serviceable with a really strong book. Ultimately the score will likely affect your overall experience, but it really is completely subjective. I do not find Kinky Boots score unforgettable at all, but others might. The score is ultimately just your opinion, not a definitive fact.

That was my first thought as well. Not to mention that a "weak score" is purely subjective, so personally, I'd add Memphis, The Producers, Raisin, Applause, Hallelujah Baby, and Redhead to the list. And perhaps a few others, depending on the criteria. Based on how much of the score is committed to memory upon leaving the theatre and/or hearing it for the very first time, I'd also add others like Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Fun Home, Gentleman's Guide, Billy Elliot, In the Heights, Spring Awakening, Passion, Mystery of Edwin Drood, Nine, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Fiorello and Wonderful Town where I couldn't pluck a tune out of thin air after the first time I ever heard the scores.

"Apples and oranges"? That doesn't make sense in this context.

I didn't say I didn't like the show. I just don't understand how something with a serviceable score can be in a serious conversation for best musical. HadesTown and The Prom are superior as far as scores go. I personally found The Prom to be funnier and more original than Tootsie.
Kinky Boots had a number of songs on it that would be seen as good by most standards. I can't honestly remember one song from Tootsie that I'd want to revisit out of the context of the show.

It has already been explained and demonstrated to you.

I can't say Ive seen many people say they love this score but Ive seen more positive reviews than yours. I think ultimately it being serviceable is your opinion. Youre more than allowed to have said opinion, but stating "Why is this a front runner if the score sucks" is simply opinion based and not fact based. The way you've been stating it seems as if its more a fact than an opinion is all I'm saying.
