With The Sound Of Music coming to tv, I thought it would be interesting to list some of the other tv musicals.
Damn Yankees starring Phil Silvers as Applegate, Lee Remick as Lola, Linda Lavin as Gloria, Jim Backus and Ray Middleton.

There have been so many from the '50s to the '60s. The '50s Kiss Me Kate and bizarre Anything Goes are on DVD - I wish the same people would release the excellent Roz Russell Wonderful Town which I only have on VHS.

The Fantasticks was done (abridged I believe) as was Charlie Brown of course. Robert Goulet did Carousel in the '60s. That bizarre Superman from the early 70s and Bacall in Applause.
TONS of original musicals including Bacharac/David's On the Flip Side, Sondheim's Evening Primrose...

A number of Menotti's operas were on tv, aside from Amahl, his biggest hit The Medium was an early broadcast as was the kinda bizarre The Consul.
And of course Tab Hunter, who had been a top notch figure skater, in Hans Brinker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y82NXnAyLV0 He doesn't seem to think too much of it in his memoirs.

There's very little of On the Flipside online, but it was part of the same series as Evening Primrose and the Harnick/Boch Canterbury Ghost.
The clips all seem to be from Rick Nelson fans -- I have a soft spot for the score (it predated Promises Promises) but it's very silly stuff, a kinda male pop star Cinderella.

Posted: 11/26/13 at 10:47pmI remember seeing ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Carol Burnett on television when I was a kid. It was wonderful, but was never heard from again. they also aired AINT MISBEHAVIN with the original cast in the 80's. I would LOVE to have that on DVD.

Ethel Merman did a televised version of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN after her 1966 Lincoln Center revival. Aside from this number, it's reportedly been lost to the ages.

Superman wound up on ABC and it was an absolute disaster. If they had only recorded the original .

It's amazing how there is no record of the "Annie Get Your Gun" with Merman, even though lots of people have been trying to find it.
Too bad the same can't be said for the truly horrible "Music Man" with the ever bland and boring Matthew Broderick.

I really enjoyed the TV version of "Brigadoon", a breath of fresh air in "66 or "67 when I saw it as a college freshman.
I see no mention of "Applause" with Lauren Bacall - a real surprise to see it on tv. Is this out there somewhere? Loved the Broadway show, but can't really remember how well the tv broadcast transferred to the little screen.
