I'm seeing wicked in October and thats the 1st and most likely last time i will see Idina in wicked... Id reeeeeaaaaally like to take a few pictures but I'll probably be the only one because she doesnt leave until January... Do you think it would be alright to take pictures during the curtain call? I might just buy a disposable camera instead of bringing my nice one just in case they decide to take it away
I remember when I went to see TABOO about a week before it closed. George came out and was doing his solo, "Ich bin Kunst", some guy in the front row took out his camera and flashed a picture of him. George looked at the guy and goes, "Take as many pictures as you want. I don't really care." So, with that, almost every camera in the theatre was flashing away and the ushers were running around going crazy telling people to stop.
It really depends on the mood of the ushers and people around you that might rat you out. Hope you have fun at the show.
When I saw The Music Man I took a picture of the curtain before the show and was told to put my camera away. I've been to a couple last performances, and the only one I took my camera to was Urinetown and I waited until curtain call to take any one photo of the final bow because I didn't want to be rude. I didn't see any flashes that night besides curtain call, which I thought was respectful.
I honestly don't see why people get so excited about taking pictures of people in the show. It's majorly annoying to the people onstage. VERY distracting, and rude. If you're such a big fan of someone, you should respect them and put the camera away during a show. If it's a final performance, I can understand the excitement of wanting to get a photo, but still, they're still performing up there and I think you should wait until curtain call.

What about taking pictures without flash during the performance?
I don't see any problem with it.....Just don't get caught! Some ushers can be very unkind.
Taking pictures without a flash is ok, as long as there's no loud clicks and whirrs to distract those around you (they didn't pay a hundred buck a pop to listen to you rustle around).
At the Taboo finale, the announcement actually said "The cast of Taboo kindly requests..." to which the audience applauded loudly.
Cheno's finale was ruined by all the flash photography. Of course curtain calls are fine, but during the quietest moments a flash of light totally distracts everyone's attention.
Don't forget there are people seeing your favorite show for the first time, and they deserve to get the experience they paid for, not "audience participation". Do what you will just be considerate.
At the final performance of EFX in Las Vegas in 2002 they actually allowed all the Rick Springfield fans and anyone who wanted to take pictures with flash and video tape through the entire show.
When I saw avenue Q, the ushers were being extreme. One thought she saw a flash and immediatly came over to our isle(this is before the show started) and stared directly at my mom and said to out the camera away or it would be taken away. Funny because no one else saw a flash and my mom didn't even have a camera with her.
If it's not a 'final' performance or show closing you should just purchase the souvenir program.
During curtain calls of a final performance or show closing there is a general acceptance of flash photography, however during the show it is very distracting and 'breaks' the magic for everyone.
"What about taking pictures without flash during the performance?"
If there is an announcement before the show begins that there is to be NO PHOTOGRAPHY, then you don't take pictures PERIOD -- whether or not you have a flash. They don't make that announcement just because they feel like it. Besides the flash issues, which can be dangerous to the performers on the stage, there are still copyright issues even with still photos.
yup at closing of Taboo one flash went off and no one said anything and then it was two flashes and then like 15, 20. during intermission the announcer came over and told everyone to please not take any more pictures which just made us cream louder. but the LSOH people are crazy so im not sure with them hope you are having a great time
Yes-- Let us remember that taking photographs of or during the show (curtain call included) is ILLEGAL. There are copyright issues regarding sets, costumes (the cast is still wearing costumes during curtain call), and practically everything on that stage.
...But many turn a blind eye to such things.
I'll come clean and admit that the one time I took a few photos of a friend's last performance in a well-known Broadway show. It was during the curtain call and farewell speeches. I had a very good center orchestra seat and took the photos without a flash so as to not cause a disturbance. The photos turned out great and I gave them to my friend who loved the memory of that moment.
It is NEVER EVER ok to take a photo anywhere inside a Broadway theatre:
1. Copywright issues
2. Local One union issues
3. Security (aka Terrorism)
You are not entitled to take pictures no matter whether or not there is a flash, whether or not the curtain is down, whether or not you are facing away from the stage or in the lobby.
