Thanks for reminding me of this, Jacob!
When I saw this live over the summer, I said Shaina Taub’s score hit that sweet spot between Great Comet and Hadestown, but while listening to this album today, I have to say it leans slightly more towards the latter. A bit more singer-songwriter, so to speak, with some joyous communal moments thrown in as well.
I didn’t see Shaina as Jaques, but she sounds lovely, even if her diction could be a little better. Ato Blankson-Wood and Rebecca Naomi Jones remain top-notch.
I hope people hear this score and crack a big smile throughout, just as it did for me… if you’re having a tough day, consider a trip to the Forest of Arden.
Now can someone tell Jill Furman to bring Shaina’s Suffs to Broadway?
