What theater songs make you cry or choke up you up when you hear them? Some of mine are: "Anytime" and "Goodbye/Boom boom" from Elegies: A Song Cycle "Defying Gravity" and "For Good" from Wicked "Heroes All Around" and "Learning To Let Go" from Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens most of the john and jen cast recording most of The Last Five Years recording and finally most of tick tick boom.
Let me know what you think, Nick

Anything can be, depending how you see when you're looking at the world with brand new eyes.

"There is a Fountain / It Don't Make Sense" from Parade is probably the only one worth mentioning, actually...very little has the overwhelming effect of that song for me.
"For Good" from Wicked.. teh CD gets me, but I have a recording of that song from opening night and you can hear Cheno crying and it gets me every time
"on My Own" from Les Miz "A Little Fall of Rain" from Les Miz
one of my all-time favorite tear jerkers when simba sings "endless nights" about his father in the lion king. more recently, when greg sings "honestly, i love you" to peter in the boy from oz.
the benediction/eulogy song that Sarah Uriarte Berry's character (Nicola) sings about Leigh Bowery is probably the one you mean, which is accompanied by a projection sequence of the actual Bowery. i also forget the title, i believe it's in a foreign language or Latin...lovely song, beautifully acted and staged. TABOO got a very bad rap, IMHO.
Nothing in the musical theatre can tear me up quite like the "saying goodbye to the sons" sequence of TERMS OF ENDEARMENT...but there are moments in SOUTH PACIFIC ("Carefully Taught" and Liat's goodbye to Cable) that can come close. The same thing can happen in smaller productions of MISS SAIGON, for instance when it is presented in the round...there is something about that "saying goodbye even though i can't bear it" dynamic that just gets me.

"I guarantee that we'll have tough
times. I guarantee that at some point
one or both of us will want to get out.
But I also guarantee that if I don't
ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for
the rest of my life..."
I get choked up a lot at musicals, but thats probbly becuase im such a sap...some choice moments would have to be.. "Daddy's Hands" from Ragtime "Cover You Reprise" from Rent "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Mis oh and I agree with Miss Saigon, but the song "I'd give my life for you" in particular
well usually I don't cry at CD'S but some songs that made me cry at the shows were For Good-Wicked Opening Of Lion King Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again-Phantom and i'm a dork and always cry at the end of Beauty and The Beast
Cadriel - Also love that song, but was disappointed when they cut some of it in the tour - specifically, the section where they all say what they remember about her (she laughed when I put ribbons in her hair). But yes, that was a very tearful moment. One of the best shows of the decade.
Also - We'll Meet Tomorrow from Titanic
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
DEFINITELY For Good from Wicked, as you said- also the finale of Wicked. And the finale of Les Miz, along with A Little Fall of Rain and at times On My Own.
