Posted: 12/7/08 at 5:23pmI was lucky enough to have seen Liza Minnelli for the first time in her Tony award winning performance as “Flora, The Red Menace”, which ran for only 87 performances on Broadway in the summer of 1965. Although not a hit, this show was also John Kander and Fred Ebb’s first book musical together and began their long association with Minnelli. I still don’t know why Jill Hayworth was cast as Sally Bowles in the stage version of “Cabaret” rather than Minnelli but of course she got to play the role in the 1972 film version and took home an Oscar for her electrifying portrayal. But even more important to me is the moment I realized that Liza Minnelli was a great artist and that was when in 1968 I heard her on an A&M Records various artists 10 track Christmas Sampler called “Something Festive” singing “Raggedy Ann & Raggedy Andy” a beautiful new (at the time) Christmas ballad with music by Larry Marks & lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman. Minnelli’s raw, poignant almost heartbreaking performance of this song still moves me and I still listen to this song every Christmas. In many ways this song is the equivalent or in my opinion better than her mother, Judy Garland’s vocal a quarter of a century earlier of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” in the film, “Meet Me in St. Louis.” “Raggedy Ann & Raggedy Andy” is on a new CD set of all the recordings Minnelli made for A&M Records from 1968-70 and her youthful exuberance shines through even the musical material that does not deserve it. Those are my first memories of Liza Minnelli, a singing actress who is often better than the music she is singing and the music becomes better because she is singing it.

First time was in 1972 on the big screen in CABARET and on NBC TV's LIZA WITH A "Z" special.
First time 'live' was at the Winter Garden in 1974. I was 9 years old and to this very day, I still remember vividly the entire show/concert.
I was also fortunate (and blessed) to see her short run as Roxie Hart in CHICAGO back in 1975.
NYC was one electrifying place back in the 70's.

Somewhere around 1964 or 1965 (I don't remember exactly). My brother, who was in the hospital (recovering from his umpteenth surgery), had a private room, but he was asked to give it up for Liza Minelli, who had just had her appendix out. Apparently her celebrity appendix rated higher than my brother's mundane colon.
Anyway, when we went to visit him that day, we didn't know he'd been moved and we walked in on Liza by mistake. She was quite understanding, and apologetic, and my (very gregarious) father stayed and chatted with her for quite a while.
One of those odd little memories from one's childhood.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 2:34amI first saw her a few years ago in Las Vegas when she was performing at the LUXOR. She did the entire show topless and it was amazing.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 8:31pmI first saw her in the 1990's on a video of the 1969 film, "The Sterile Cuckoo". Her performance was fantastic and I wish she had done more films. This led me to seeing her in "New York, New York" and although the film was not the greatest she was excellent and her singing was unbelievable.
