For the record, in the theatre, Natasha Richardson's voice while not "pretty" was quite powerful.

Sally is definitely not supposed to be a great singer. Certainly not the Vegas brand of singer Liza brought to the film version.

Susan Egan said in interviews that she was directed to sing largely in straight tone. They didn't want Sally to sound like a trained singer.

Jayne Horrocks was fabulous in London, as well, and she wasn't a great singer.

I thought Teri did a fantastic job.
I went in not expecting much and was very pleasantly surprised.

I shall never, ever forget her rendition of the title song. She came out, grabbed the mic fiercely with both hands and never let go of it. She sang the entire song with a 'deer in the headlights' look on her face and during the last verse/breakdown, she stood there like a rock, belting it, with tears streaming down her face and you truly believed that if she let go of the mic, she would fall in a heap to the floor. I must say, it was amazing. When she finished the song after that big note, she just stood there, looking terrified. It was the first time Sally Bowles ever broke my heart. I'm actually getting misty thinking about it. She was outstanding.

MEF, did you see Jane Horrocks in London? Kander and Ebb don't mention her by name in their book, but they express their dissatisfaction with "the leading lady." I assume they were talking about her (and I'm happy to hear a different opinion - loved her on AbFab and am really intrigued with the idea of her as Sally).

NCGuy---

Yes, I saw Horrocks as Sally opposite Alan Cumming in the Donmar Warehouse production of CABARET. She was very raw, emotional, and experimental. Her singing wasn't amazing, but it was good enough to pass, and she did fine in thatn aspect. Her acting was fierce, though. Brilliant in that department. I don't think they ever made a recording of her. Just my two cents.

No she wasn't. I believe she sang Don't Tell Mama and Mein Herr as some promotional thing. Something like that, kinda like when Meredith Viera got all done up to perform Cabaret on The View.

I've only seen Jane Horricks on the televised production of CABARET from the Donmar, but I wasn't much impressed. Her singing is incredibly erratic (and often extremely off key)but more importantly the characterization is just soooooo over the top. Perhaps it was a different experience seeing her live, but I'm glad she didn't do the production at the Roundabout.

I liked Deborah Gibson...certainly not the best I've seen by any stretch, but she did a very nice job singing, dancing, and portraying young desperation in a novice way.

Jane Horricks can sing superbly! You do realise she did ALL the singing for little voice? The role was written for her and the voices she could do. I realise it is imitating but anyone who can imitate Judy that well needs a medal!!

And Jane's Sally was downright frightening at times. Towards the end of the song "Cabaret", when she began to scream rather than sing, I was literally shaking. I really admired and enjoyed her interpretation, but in a way I'm glad she didn't do it on Broadway: If she had, we would have all been deprived of what is possibly the best female musical theatre performance of the part 25 years (or second best, depending on your feelings towards Donna Murphy in Passion).

Anyway, would Jane have been allowed to do the production, if asked? Could she be eligible for an "international star" visa?

Saw her in Chicago in "Cabaret"..........what a waste of time and money. She was the absolute worst to say the least.

Teri was a disaster in Cabaret...Her singing was unlistenable!

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

Joely Fisher, simply put, was amazing. I saw her twice, and was truly amazed. I enjoyed her on "Ellen" and all, but I had NO idea of her true ability as a singer and an actress. I think the better Sally sings, without being perfect, the more tragic it makes the character. I dont' want to hear terrible, flat singing, but I don't think it should be perfect. Joely had the perfect mix and made it sound amazing.
