Click on the video at the link below and you'll see a remarkable compilation of Chita Rivera in her prime, dancing and singing on various tv specials with Gwen Verdon, Carol Burnett, Judy Garland, Maurice Chevalier, Liza Minnelli and others. She was truly amazing then (and now):

This video is similar sans story about her mother to the 12 minute one playing at the theater.

Thank you for that!! It was glorious to see Chita in her prime and makes me sad to think that Broadway doesn't really produce ultimate talented super stars like her anymore. There are exceptional people, but not like the mega watt lights that used to shine bright all over Broadway.

P.S. Margo, on a personal note, I think you are amazing. Everytime I see a post from you I learn something. Thank you.

Thankyou so much for that Margo.

It was thrilling, every minute of it. It's so amazing to see footage from shows I've always dreamed of seeing properly done.

May the rest of her life be as successful as all that has preceded...

There is truly one thing that makes Chita Rivera stand out: her presence.
I was never particularly fond of her singing voice and from the viewpoint of a dancer, she sometimes lacks good technique, while she is still a very good mover. But, in the end, that doesn't matter. What made her a star is the fact that you can't keep your eyes off of her. She's got something that can't be taught. She feels the music and that makes you feel it along with her.
There are other people who are like that. Angela Lansbury for instance... not such a great singer... amazing performer.
That always gets me... it's not always about your level of talent, but moreover what you bring to the table that sets you apart.

what a legend, i look forward to seeing this

A dancer might dream to see her name in lights and mean it, but all she really dreams is to make someone else feel the way she did when she first saw a dancer. And that is so beautiful-Anonymous

Thanks for the link Margo! Have you seen the show? Any plans to see it? Some of the feedback (on another thread) has been fairly negative. I have tickets for this Saturday evening's performance and was so looking forward to it! Just wondering what your take on it is. I'm fairly new around here, but it's obvious that your opinions are highly respected and carry a considerable amount of weight, and rightfully so. I always enjoy reading your posts and critiques. You're an endless wealth of knowledge and information!

She's wonderful, but the book of this show is generic and suyperficial with very few interesting anecdotes or personal observations. Most of her descriptions of the people she worked with over the years sound like they came out of an encyclopedia. There are a few strong moments where the show really takes off, but most of the evening is fairly earthbound and mundane. Rivera deserved a better show than this to represent her life and career.

Margo... thanks for taking the time to respond. That seems to be the general consensus. I'm really surprised that Terrance McNally's book is so weak and the choreography isn't better. That's really too bad. I guess I'll just have to make do with seeing the indomitable Chita in the flesh, and enjoy the fleetingly few shining moments.

Margo... I realize that it's subjective and all comes down to personal taste, but for your money, what would you say are the Best Musical and Best Non-Musical currently playing on Broadway? And what upcoming show, or shows, are you the most excited about and interested in seeing when they open? I don't mean to thread-jack or pick your brain, but if I'm going to spend upwards of $100.00 + per ticket, I'd really appreciate a discerning opinion and recommendation.

Oy. Is there really no student rush? Hm... maybe if I go on a Saturday night, TKTS will have 50% off the $56.25 seats? Has anyone else done this or seen the show for less than $50 somehow?

Chita is an idol of mine and getting to see that video was amazing. She is such a talent! I wish I could see the show so badly after that.
