Bebe's plot about aging is depressing. Give her a better dilemma.

As I said during the Chicago previews, they already had her dilemma, but I don't understand why they tried to weaken her character by layering her subplot with unnecessary superficial phobias. Her daughter is growing up and Morticia is facing the possibility of Wednesday's leaving the nest. That is all they need to work with. It should be a mother/daughter bonding subplot. The vanity issues and fear of aging don't work in someone who is typically a paragon of self-confidence.

Sounds a little like "Father Of The Bride" starring Morticia

It's a shame to hear the mediocre reviews. I am DYING to see this because I'm so curious. It has so much potentially with great characters and good original source.

And anyone who has done the rush, what time have you gotten there? And how many people were there at 6? And did everyone get tickets?

Mediocre reviews? I'd say most of them are beyond mediocre and more like atrocious!

I rushed yesterday. We were first in line at 4:30. There was about 15-20 people at 6. I only know of 8 that got tickets.

Okay, thank you. The earliest I could get there is 5:45 so I most likely won't get tickets. That sucks... And did it look completely sold out?

From what I could tell I'm pretty sure it was completely sold out. For this one, I'd say wait for standng room. If I'm remembering correctly it's the back of the orchestra, so WAY better seats than what I had last night; Mezz K center.

I mean it's a big set and I've seen worse but it wasn't anything great. I had semi-tall people a few rows ahead of me and there's not much of a slope so I was leaning forward most of the time to see over their heads. When I could see I could make out facial expressions and everything, but I found the sound to be far too quiet.

So I guess reviews for this musical are basically the same when it was in Chicago: mediocre at best, but usually pretty horrible.

What I can't seem to understand is the spectrum gap. A few love it, and most really hate it (or it was a huge let down).

Sadly, most of the positives seem to be waving a shill flag (recently joined, no icon, very few posts not relating to AF, canned language). Not accusing anyone specifically, but it's upsetting because I really want to believe it's going to be a good show.

I legitimately enjoyed it, and I WISH I were getting paid to come on here and say so. Seriously, in the four Broadway shows I've worked on, I've never known anyone to actually go online and boost them, unless it was of their own accord.

No, it's not a perfect show. The second act feels slow to me, and there are some pieces I wish would cease to exist, but I love the first act, the design concept, the effects, and the cast. It was a really enjoyable evening, for me. Your mileage may vary, and that's totally fine.

I got a student rush ticket at 7:40 on Tuesday and moved to the orchestra before the show even started.

IMO, a shill is someone that comes on the board to boost a show that has ANY financial incentive to do. I don't think too many are specifically PAID to do just that, but KEEPING your job is a pretty good incentive, and therefore makes one a shill.

Who is wishing this show to FAIL? Should they not express their opinions if they truly disliked the show? That's ridiculous. It is FROM the opinions of both sides of the spectrum that I will decide whether or not to see this...because of WHY they do or don't like the show. However, if it's not good....it shouldn't stay.

From what I hear the advance sales for this is pretty damn good...so I don't think there's too much too worry about it for it's near future anyway. Time will tell.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

REALLY?! You just made my day! Thank you, hopefully that will be the same situation today.

Edit: What time has the show been getting out? I'm aware that the first preview started late but has it gotten shorter? Updated On: 3/11/10 at 06:33 AM

I saw it Tuesday and it let out around 10:40. I believe it started only a few minutes late.

I didn't love it or hate in Chicago. I thought the visual aspect of the show was wonderful and the cast was great. But the book was weak and the score was mostly forgettable with about three strong numbers, one of which has now been replaced (Clandango). There were some very funny moments, but I left feeling that I hadn't witnessed anything special. You could say that I was entertained for the most part, but nothing thrilling or exciting to the point that I would see it again or particularly recommend it to anyone unless cheap tickets were available.

It sounds like they did make some improvements since Chicago (especially replacing that awful Second Banana number), but not enough to place the show into any sort of "must-see" event status. The cast is enough to generate sales, but as soon as Lane and Neuwirth leave, I think the show will fold.

I rushed yesterday and my friend got there around 4:30 to save our spot. She ended up being first in line. By 5:30 there were well over 20 people in line. Our seats were Balcony Row F and I had an aisle seat. My seat was perfect! There were no obstructed views. I had a full on complete view of the stage and everything that happened. Definitely worth the $41.50.

And I'll say...I'm very critical, but I really enjoyed the show. I'm in the minority, but I found it charming, entertaining, catchy, and very enjoyable. The cast is great...Bebe is my least favorite though. Not because she's necessarily bad, but because she doesn't do much! They need to give her more to do. They set up her "dance" number to be this big show stopper and it just falls flat.

Krysta Rodriguez was my favorite. She definitely shines in a show with a cast where it is definitely hard to stick out since everyone is so great in their roles.

And I liked the score and found a lot of the songs memorable. I'm still humming Lucas and Wednesday's duet in my head.

Of course, there are things that need work. The book/story needs a little tightening and they could definitely amp up the role of Morticia. And I just didn't like the closing number at all. But, from a production standpoint the show ran very smoothly.

I'm excited to go back and see this again after it opens.

This thread is reminding me of the Spamalot thread---not a lot of middle ground. I'm looking forward to seeing it because of the cast, I'm sure I will enjoy it!

Loved that blog!!!

For what its worth, I have seen the show once on Monday and on Wed as well. I agree, I felt the show did not impress me with the score and plot, I was disappointed (its the first preview people). The second time around I knew what to expect, I knew the songs and the jokes but I was a lot more appreciative of it. The show is infected with talent in so many ways.

Instead of getting rid any of the numbers, I think they should add a few more. I think Clandango should be included somewhere in the show. There is no worthy show stopping number either I feel.
I feel Carolee was given the short end of the stick as well as Jackie. But what they have to offer is nothing short of AMAZING.

I don't know how much re-arranging they can do before it opens but the show can only get better from here on in. I wish the producers could hold a post performance feedback session one night.

On a very personal and biased note, I don't see myself getting excited for the Tonys this year if I know A Greenday Musical or Memphis will walkout with BEST MUSICAL.

I really loved the snarky Nathan and Jackie dialogue. I don't even care about the filming.
