I am really amazed that in these challenging times, this musical, that could have been a real summer hit was allowed to fail. Are these backers just fools?...how do they not assemble a test audience and just fix the dam thing. How long can they keep sucking the public in with slick advertising and nothing else to back it up...

A true shame, the writing is on the wall with this one after just a few performances. Now I have to see it because i just have to see how bad it really is..cant they attempt to fix it before the NYT kills it

Oh ignore Namo, he lives for bitching on here, he countsdown the seconds until he can log back on and feel alive. It's a tad sad really.

I treat NAMO like a fly on an elephants ass. Every once in awhile though I answer one of his hate diatribes to let him feel like his life has a purpose.

I think it's disgusting that people are sickly rooting for this show to fail and other new shows. Do you not have lives? oh wait..no! You're probably all failed actors who are talentless, lonely and realize you will never be in a production like this so you sit behind your little computer and gain the only power you will ever have in your lives to rip apart every show and every actor.

Um, Kushner basically IS a self-hating Jew, which is seen at its peak in Caroline, or Change.

Yes, I read that argument she made. And I think it's nuts.

I'm pulling for this show, because of all the "franchise" shows of the past decade or so, I think The Addams Family really has the most potential as a musical. I guess I'll have to see for myself...

While Amneris' thoughts on some people on this board might be a bit harsh, I do wonder why so many people on this board bash producers. Certainly if all they were interested in was making money, they could find more certain ways to do it. Most producers I know, of course want to make a profit - that is the only way they will be able to continue to produce shows, but they also work in the theater primarily because they love it. As for The Addams Family, clearly some have enjoyed the show (as I have) and some have not, just as is the case with most shows. People are entitled to their taste. But sometimes on these boards I think posters forget that they are writing about real people who are working very hard to create something. Some posters then get a bit carried away with a nasty tone. I'm not pointing any fingers, but I do think this is something to think about.

Well, I thought the show was pretty good last night. The music pieces were fun and performed well (for the most part). Krysta Rodriguez did *great* as Wednesday!

I did not think Morticia's costume was hideous at all.

I see all the diatribes against the show and just don't understand them. I didn't go expecting a life-changing theatre experience. What I had was a fun night at the theatre with some great musical numbers and a downright entertaining show.

I am by no means a shill for anyone nor an expert theatre critic. I'm just a regular theatre patron.

Has the show curtain changed?

It was a red curtain with some yellow fringe and trim while it was in Chicago.

Isn't that what the out-of-town try-out was for?

I thought the red curtain was used very effectively. It seemed organic and did a great job of framing scenes.

I thought the curtain was beautiful. The costumes from the photo in your Avatar, JamiekennyWicked, have changed.

The curtain is the same as in Chicago, with a couple of new tricks. I think it works great - the scene-separating effect really impressed me in Chicago. From what I've seen of the NYC version, transitions have been a little rough, so hopefully it will smooth out and be just as impressive by opening night.

I saw the show last night, and had mixed feelings. It had its funny moments, about what I expected, but not much more. The tunes were mostly forgettable.
Krysta Rodriguez stole the show for me. She's a little dynamo!
Kevin Chamberlain looks like he was born to play Uncle Fester. I don't know if that's much of a compliment, but I enjoyed his performance very much.
And Jackie Hoffman was also wonderful.
It's been a long time since I saw a new musical that really knocked my socks off (Billy Elliot), and I'm still waiting.
In the meantime, lots of great revivals, including the previously mentioned "La Cage", which I'm looking forward to next month.
btw. The origional Gomez, John Astin was in the audience and greeted fans at the stage door, but Nathan snucked out.

Roxy, being able to predict your behavior based on witnessing you repeating it is a "hate diatribe"?

I really loved this show and from what I saw the audience is applauding, laughing and giving the show standing ovations (verified by several people on the dress rehearsal and two previews so far). I, like Amneris, fanb and AverageBwayNut, just wonder what is so wrong if you actually like a show? Really – I too can think that my view is the only one that is right but not quite so vehemently. And so what if you don’t like the show – that doesn’t mean is is a bad show, that is what’s great about live theatre – for every show there are people who love it and people who don’t Given this is a an open forum, or at least my understanding is that this is a forum for Broadway enthusiasts, I am confused by all the anger …so, if you like the show, you are automatically considered a shill on this board? Isn’t it just as possible that it is the negative comments are shills for other camps?

I have a hard time understanding why people here seem to want this show to fail – it is in previews -chill. I prefer to encourage new work rather than try to knock it down before it has a chance to stand on its own feet. Especially new shows, not revivals or stories that come from a movie, etc…I have nothing but respect for the people, producers and all the people who put their careers on the line, working around the clock to present a new play or musical. What is there to be angry about – rather be excited that you live in a town where they are creating new musicals or we would all have to see MAMMA MIA! or LION KING again. The show is still in previews…PREVIEWS…it is still a work in progress, so what is the point of early condemnation or your certainty that the show will fail?

Blaxx, there really is no point to the video you posted as this song was cut along with some of the bits featured. I was unaware that “real” audiences do not applaud when they enjoy a musical number or – gasp – the show as a whole.

Sorry about the diatribe, but who wants to be attacked simply because you enjoyed a show.

This happens whenever a big show comes in and disappoints a segment of the audience that had high expectations. It angers people. I don't see anybody actively wishing it would close, I see people who feel let down.

The first clue that there's a problem is when the line of defense is something along the lines of "It's not Shakespeare but it's entertaining, what's wrong with just being entertained, it got standing ovations?".

The above is the best recommendation for me to see a show, Nam.

I hope this doesn't go the 9to5 route!! I thoroughly enjoyed this in Chicago. The talent in the show is remarkable.

I was there last night sitting with the swings and designers.
It's a very funny show and Nathan Lane is absolutely hysterical.
It's more of an ensemble piece but Nathan ties it all together and is the front runner.
Bebe needs more to do, a new solo in act one perhaps and very few of her jokes land. Bebe's plot about aging is depressing. Give her a better dilemma.
Fester, Grandma and Pugsly are wonderful, they each steal the show at some point. Loved Terrence and Carolee too cause they are who they are, silly plot lines for them once they get into the house. Wednesday and her beau are ok, but I came to see Gomez and Morticia.
The special effects could be crisper and clearer.
Needs some tightening especially in act 2 when it's very loose until we get back on track with the wedding. A fun show, a cute show, an excellent cast. As long as Nathan and Bebe stay, it will make a fortune. Tony season will be interesting.

****SPOILER ALERT*** They should move "One Normal Night" to the top of the show or create another new opening. I think I liked the Chicago opener better. They could also open the show with them standing behind the house like in "One Normal Night." It was a great effect.
