Priest- yes, I am a tenor, but I've never had voice lessons. I can reach that note, but I can't seem to sustain it is all. When I come down off of it, it is sometimes not so pretty.
So has anyone here seen the "Sondheim DVD Set" with "Into the Woods", "Sweeney Todd", "Sunday in the Park With George" AND "Follies In Concert"? It is over $100- and I'm tempted, but I don't have that kind of cash right now.
That set also comes with PASSION and the SONDHEIM: A CLEBRATION AT CARNEGIE HALL DVD we were talking about.
It is a good deal.
Judi Dench doesn't have the best singing voice either, but I would have killed to have seen her in A Little Night Music in London years ago. Though we did get a treat in the Cameron Mackintosh "Hey Mr. Producer" celebration...
point well taken -- it's just I still shudder when I think of what Gelnn did to another show written by another composer about a big house in Hollywood....
Which was made better when she was replaced by Betty Buckley. Who had once really wanted to do Desiree in ALNM
Oops, sorry, I should have read the whole thread.
What I've been looking for is the "Company" OBCR. I found the revival cast, but I want the recording with Stritch. Sooner or later I'll either find it or order it.
The Copany OBCR was recently reissued. you can get for, I think, 10 bucks.
Not a fan of that recording...I can't stand the actor who plays Bobby...dean Jones, is it? Updated On: 8/30/04 at 01:26 AM
Dean Jones is the only bad thing about that recording.
He has more vibrato then Patti.
I guess he is the only bad thign about the recording, but I just CANNOt listen to him sing, so when I want to listen to Company all the way through, I listen to the revival recording. I don't even think it's just his vibrato that annoys me, its the sound of his voice...it's like he has a bubble in his throat or something.
I like the revival better (no throwing of tomatoes please)
Well if tomatoes will be thrown, they'll probably throw them at me too...I prefer the revival recording as well.
The revival is probably better. But the OBCR is legendaryy.

Why did Angela Lansbury hate Bedknobs and Broomsticks?
bumping sondheim back to the front
no tomatoes here -- I think the 95 revival as a whole is superior to the OBC - the redone (and in tune) harmonies in the opening are spectaular -- especially the We Love, We Love We Love yous....as well as the inclusion of Marry Me a Little (one of my fav SS songs)
OBC is a classic and should be a part of anyone's collection, but for pure sound -- 95 revival is terrific
I'm not sure about Glenn Close. Judith Ivey was in the recent Los Angeles production and she was simply perfect.
Of course, we also had Marc Kudisch, Michelle Pawk, Victor Garber and Laura Benanti. Okay, do I sound like I am gloating? Well, hey! Why not? LA is not known for its excellent theater productions. Sondheim even came out to see the show and said it was the best production of ALNM he has seen. And, well...he IS the master!
Priest: Please don't ever stop talking about Sondheim or Sweeney. There are many of us who could never get bored! :
Did anyone see the Sondheim shows in DC last year? Stephen came to DC to help smooth things out in some of the shows and they were great. Sweeney was the only one I missed - and I'm still kicking myself because Christine Baranski and Brian Stokes Mitchell got such great reviews.
By the way, regarding Glen Close, she sang "Send in the Clowns" on a Sondheim Celebration CD and it made my ears bleed.
I saw Sweeny and Passion in DC -- both good -- but not my favorite productions of either show, but certainly worth the Acela ride to DC....
I agree -- anything CLose sings makes my ears bleed
how did i miss this??
Here are some overviews of the shows they did at the Sondheim celebration in DC:

I saw "Merrily We Roll Along" and "Company" at the Kennedy Center Festival. Both were first-rate and the casts were excellent.
gotta love Sondheim. The Signature theater here in DC is doing Pacific Overtures early next year in a kubuki style. It should be fun. They are also doing a new show starring Marc Kudisch called 'The Highest Yellow'. Something for us outside of NYC!!
I'm watching the interview they did with Sondheim at the Kennedy Center a while back - ooops - I mean, I am hard at work at my desk.
