I can't wait 'till the revival!! Trevor nunn should do a good job.
I sure wish I could have seen the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's Production. Did anyone see it?
amasis, I agree, I enjoy LNM, Honestly musically my favorite is company, I just really love some of the performances. Between Ladies who lunch and Being Alive, probably my two favorite sondheim songs. But yeah good call on a Little Night Music, definately underrated in the world of Sondheim.
Personally, I find Being Alive to be one of Sondheim's weakest. Musically, that is.
I know it is great, but I've never warmed to the song.

I LOVE Being Alive. I think, both musically and lyrically, it's sooooooo powerful. Gives me chills every time.
I like the lyrics to "Being Alive". I just think he captures this bittersweet feeling what of being in a serious, deeply committed relationship is like. Maybe musically it's not the best, but the lyrics made me fall in love with it. "Sorry Grateful" is another one that I reall like from Company.
Priest... Which revival are you talking about?

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
!!! When??? Oh, I'm so out of the loop these days now that I've moved away... =( Trevor Nunn is directing it?
Nunn is directing. And Glenn Close is suppossed to play Desiree.
That's interesting. I've never heard Glenn Close singing. Hm.
Just want to put this in people's heads...
Now, insofar as approaching it,
What would be festive
But have its effect?
Now, there are two ways of broaching it:
A, the suggestive,
And B, the direct.
Say
That I settle on B, to wit,
A charmingly
Lecherous mood,
A,
I could put on my nightshirt or sit
Disarmingly,
B, in the nude.
That might be effective;
My body's all right--
But not in perspective
And not in the light.
etc.

Believe it or not, my favorite rendition of "Being Alive" is by Patti Lupone, on the Celebration at Carnegie Hall CD. For once she channels that tremendous voice of hers without going into too many LuPone-isms. It's quite something.
LuPone's 'Being Alive' on that DVD is fantastic.
But the performance on that DVD that is just mesmerising is Dorothy Loudon's 'Losing My Mind/ You Could Drive a Person Crazy'
I love Sondheim, but I'm not too familiar with some of his work. My number-one-favorite-of-all-time-no-substitutes musical is "Into the Woods," which is the first Sondheim show that I was introduced to. I also LOVE "Sweeney Todd" (listening to it right now, actually) and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Big fan of "Sunday in the Park with George," too. (I think I'm forgetting some) What are his other best shows? I'm thinking about checking out "Company," but what else?

Yup, that was good too. I really didn't like the concert as a whole, but the highlights are great.
Company is great, definitely check it out. Follies has a beautiful score, too. And Passion. And A Little Night Music, as I kept on harping above
PACIFIC OVERTURES is a highly underappreciated show/score.

I agree- even when I was first discovering Sondheim, I barely heard about it. It was all about Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods.
Quibbler, check out FOLLIES, COMPANY and PACIFIC OVERTURES.
I'll know you'll love FOLLI ES and COMPANY.
PO may be a little harder of a sell, but it is terrific.
learning so much since ive joined the board. i will be picking up "sweeney todd" "company" and "follies" because ive never heard the scores **ducks from getting hit with a slew of original cast albums**
I had the joy to be at the Carnegie celebration -- of course by looking at my icon you know what I think about Patti -- "LuPonisms and all"...one of my favorite that did not make the DVD, but on the recording is Betty's rendition of I Never DO ANyting Twice...fierce and FUN!
I also think Billy Stritch did a great rendition of Anyone Can Whistle...I just love that song...
I also agree with you Priest -- that performance of Dorothy Loudon is one that will mark her great career!
Awesome!
One word of advice. Do not get the OBCR for FOLLIES. It is mediocre, highly incomplete and a terrible representation of the score.
Get either:
A) The 1985 Concert Version with Barbara Cook, Lee Remick, George Hearn, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Burnett, Elaine Stritch, etc
or
B) The 2001 PaperMill Playhouse Cast Recording.
Both are much better than the OBCR
the papermill production was terrific...

Well, the OBC of Follies does have a great "Broadway Baby." As much as I love Elaine Stritch, I think she took it way too slow in the concert.
I had to rely on the NYC Opera to see A Little Night Music, which was only marred by the fact that the NYS Theatre was too large for a show that would have done better in a smaller house. So I'm all for the revival, though I'd like to see who else is in the cast...
Matt_G: What was your favorite part of Sweeney Todd? I'm sure you had one...
I have to admit, I am not thrilled about Glenn Close in ALNM, but willbe ther ethe day tickets go on sale regardless...I think she will act the part, but she just can not sing
Well, she is a better singer than Glynis Johns was.
