If that's true, I absolutely didn't know it. Maybe I should look for a good Lansbury biography to be sure. As soon as I can get up off this chair. (It's seriously hot where I am.)
MAATTTTHHHEEWWW!!!!!! I am so disappointed in you!
You ...*JUST*...watched Sweeney for the...*FIRST*...time?!?!
Aghhh!!!

The real disappointment would be if he refused to watch it at all.
No opinions on Jennings or Harris?
Plum -
She does a number on a swing. A rather burlesque piece as I recall, and it sounded like her voice.
.....Jumping on the bandwagon......
Can we talk about "Passion"? I've recently become quite obsessed with it.... I think the music is absolutely gorgeous and the lyrics are heartbreaking at times. It's one of those shows, though, where you have to see it as well as listen to it, in my opinion - I've had the OBC for months, and I never could get into it, and then I got the DVD and OH MY GOD, I was blown away.
Do you guys like it? Does anyone have the London cast recording, as well? I've read some interesting comments about it.
PASSION is indeed superb. I find it slightly less thrilling than much of his other work. But still, it is far better than 99% of musical theatre.
Have you watched the DVD or just listened to it?
I own the DVD, OBCR and OLCR.
PASSION has to be my favorite of Sondheim. I love the DVD of it
I want the OLC so BAD!!!!!
when i saw jersey girl i got so excited when she wanted to do a scene from sweeney todd.
I don't really want the OLC..... The few soundeclips I've heard were not that amazing. I do like that song that was cut from the Broadway production but was used in the London one - it's a good song, but I agree that it gives away too much and also takes away from the final encounter between Fosca and Giorgio.
So, Priest, which recording do you prefer? Please share.
OBCR, no question. I like the OLCR, but you just can't beat Donna and Marin.
Yay for the Donna and Marin love. :)
They both moved me SO much..Especially Donna Murphy. She is breathtaking (in more ways than one ) in this production.
Oh and isn't the commentary track a hoot??

Well, I did such a stupid thing last night hehe! I wanted to hear 'Worst Pies In London' and so I decided to just listen to it while I slept, well first of all, I fell out of my bed when the whistle came up and then I got really freaked out by the first song and everything so I had to turn it off lol. I get really scared sometimes hehe!

As for Lansbury's earlier movie singing, she sang "Little Yellow Bird" in the 1945 "Picture of Dorian Gray." Not a musical, but a very memorable moment.
Her family came from that whole British music hall tradition.
I don't know why, but studios in that era and into the sixties were very big on dubbing even performers who were capable of doing their own singing. Perhaps they were looking for a certain uniform sound; I don't really know the answer to that mystery.

I tell you, that whistle is powerful.
I'm going to see SWEENEY TODD sometime between the 9th and the 19th. Same place I saw COMPANY. Can't wait.
Starlight Theatre
"I tell you, that whistle is powerful."
Absolutely. Even when I know it's coming, I have to brace myself for it. When you hear it for the very first time, it immediately sets the tone for the rest of the musical.
MattG -- Glad you finally saw Sweeney Todd and loved it! It's Sondheim's best!
Passion is great. I have conflicting feelings about the book; but I love the score and lyrics. I remember when I saw it with Donny Murphy, I thought, I wish I could see this with Michael Ball playing Giorgio. I just thought his voice would be great for it. So I was really happy that they did the London recording with him .
I've been listening to A Little Night Music a lot lately. What do people think of LNM?
Okay....okay....now I'm running for my DVD player....Sweeney or Passion??? Which shall it be for a Sunday evening???
As for the question: I say Jennings. No wait, Harris. Jennings, Okay Harris. No....oh shoot.....Harris!
Priest- I prefer Neil, I get goosebumps when he does "but in time...", that line from "Not While I'm Around" in his chilling falsetto. I'm also green with envy because try as I may, I can't get up to that note when I *attempt* to sing that song. I also just like his characterization better.
Nystate4, are you a tenor? If you are then I'm sure you could hit that a-flat. It is easier than it seems.
BUMP
Something not concerning the 'show which we do not speak of in a Sondheim thread' needs to be at the top.
Do you mean W... W.. Www....
nah, I'm not that cruel.
So, how about A Little Night Music?
