What are the top 5 best costumes youve seen in a show? Why? And is there one specific costume in that show that caught your eye? Updated On: 8/5/04 at 10:27 PM

Well, I was *thinking* about posting, but I couldn't decide what to say.
Basically, the costume that sticks out most in my mind (don't kill me here, kay?) is Christine's blue dress in Phantom. God, I love it. I want it so bad.
There. I posted. Happy? :)
Just watching the videos on Broadway.com made me realize that the Taboo costumes are REALLY cool!
The RENT costumes are eternal. Love them!
these aren't in any specific order:
glinda's dress at that beginning and end of the show... looks great on kristin, but even better in person than just looking at pics
red death costume from phantom... i love the movable mouth on that skullhead!
the half man/half woman costume in masquerade also... anyone know which sex wears it? i could never tell
anything from hairspray... gotta love bright colors and giant wigs!
anything from chicago :P
costume i don't like? cosette's black dress...
I know BEST is bolded and I'm sure these costumes were nothing special when being made, but I loved how in LSOH, Audrey always wore black, pink or both.
DOUBLE! Whoops!
I too love the Red Death costume from POTO.
And although I don't think it's one of the best costumes of all time, Mimi's Out Tonight outfit from RENT is forever burned into my mind. I'm such a RENThead.

OK well there have been so many amazing costumes over the years so I'm just going to go with the ones that stand out in current memory. In no special order.
1: Beauty and the beast ~ THe entire show, so functional, so creative, and really the first time anyone thought to make a man into a measuring spoon. You gotta give that something
2: Show Boat Revival ~ On an whole, breathtaking, but Julie's Yellow dress looked stunning, especially when worn by Lonette McKee(sp?)
3: Wicked ~ As beautiful as Glinda always looks, I have to give my vote to Elphie's act 2 ensem. The detail of the Wicked Witch costume is unreal when you sit up close. Not to mention the design of the hat, and layers, just gorgeous work, so many colors in it, to make what we all thought was "just a black witches dress"
4: 42nd Street ~ The colors and sparkle that show has is unreal. But to highlight what may be my favorite costume in recent years, Dorothy Brocks White feathered hat, dress and Fur is a wonderful entrance ensem, so time period and glamourous right down to the heels.
5: Chicago ~ People may think im nuts, but was there ever a sexier costume than Bebe's little black slip and fishnets. Some velmas since have worn different dresses, but that woman was unreal in that little outfit. So sexy, so fosse, so perfect.
It seems the girls always get the better clothes. Oh well, or maybe its what us theatre boys notice, our divas! Anyway those are my thoughts
The Phantom costumes are amazing. I've seen them very close up. Dang what a budget can do for sets and costumes!
In no particular order:
Phantom of the Opera
Sunset Boulevard
Flower Drum Song (though the production wasn't up to snuff)
La Boheme (Baz's version)
Guys and Dolls (the eyepopping colors)
Wicked
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves the Chicago costumes. They are so simple but yet soooo sexy.
Roxie's costume is amazing, so sexy...and still simple. Beautiful costumes.
Here's paige in the costume

Paradice's costume in BKLYN (in the Denver run) A gown made of duct tape and caution tape, absolutely brillant! All the costumes in this show were amazing. Every one of them was made from trash you would find in the street. I believe they are Tony worthy.
I loved all the costumes in POTO. Especially Christine's dress during "Masquerade".
I also love that red dress Millie wears during "Gimme Gimme".
All of Glinda's costumes in "Wicked" are pretty cool. So are Amneris' in "Aida".

I want everything Amneris wears in AIDA.
And I loved the costumes in La Boheme...and Phantom...and it would be fun just to have the blue pants and giraffe print boots from Rent...
I seem to be pretty fond of the costumes in RENT, as you can see. I actually made costumes for me and my friends when we went to see RENT on tour. I also love the costumes in Cabaret!!
I'd have to list two shows from 1981 -- the original Theoni Aldredge costumes for Dreamgirls and the William Ivey Long costumes for Nine.
Because of the blank canvas of the set in Dreamgirls, Aldredge's costumes did the work in the production, effortlessly taking the show through fashion of the 1960s and 1970s. The production's costumes featured two coup de theatres, courtesy of the costumes, the famous "Heavy" costume change, where you see the three girls in one costume in a television studio, and the next second they walk through a silver curtain in different costumes for a San Francisco concert apperance, and the transforming dress for "I Am Changing" where Effie's dress converts itself in the middle of the number for a change of scene. The disco dresses for "One Night Only" are also spectacular, and finally, the "Hard to Say Goodbye" gowns, are white gowns to end all white gowns.
The original production of Nine put William Ivey Long on the map, and his work was extraordinary. The 21 women were costumed in individual, exquisitely crafted black dresses, each perfectly designed for the character and for the actress wearing the outfit. For the "Casanova" sequence, the show's black and white palate suddenly went crazy into a riot of red and green technicolor, that at the time was considered a bit of a nod to the famed "Loveland" sequence in the original "Follies". In the dreamlike coda of the musical, the women entered in white versions of their black costumes, another eye-popping moment.
Both sets of costumes were exceedingly memorable. Long took home the Tony that year, but the work of both designers was exemplary.
William Ivey Long- Hairspray
Some of the costumes in Never Gonna Dance were stunning.
First of all, I must say that William Ivey Long is a freakin' genius. My pin-striped fedora goes off to him.
Now, as for my favorites. Well, here's a list:
Overall shows: Hairspray, The Producers, CATS, Beauty and the Beast, Les Mis, TMM
Specific costumes: the Kit Kat Girls' ensembles (so delightfully trashy), Ulla's little white dress, literally every costume in CATS (Bombalurina was my first serious foray into costuming), all of Belle's gowns (particularly the gold ball gown--I think it's breathtaking), everything in Les Mis, and the "Gimme Gimme", "TMM" and "Nuttycracker" dresses in TMM.
