Hands down, my favorite costumes are in Brooklyn! As mentioned before, Paradice's "elegant" gown for "Love Me Where I Live" always gets a huge response from the audience. I think the best costume award goes to Brooklyn though during "Brooklyn in the Blood". Any character who can accessorize with a Kentucky Fried Chicken box gets my vote! If this show doesn't get a Tony for best costumes, then there is no justice in this world!

The costumes in Taboo were stunning and freakin' amazing.
The costumes in Bombay Dreams are bright and beautiful.
(Two shows where costumes are crucial to the show)
Also... Crazy for You, The Secret Garden, The Rocky Horror Show, Assassins (revival), and I have a secret thing for the revival of The King and I's costumes.
AS THOUSANDS CHEER - Especially during the ACT I finale when the sepia tinged costumes seen behind the scrim began to move and criss-cross to Easter Parade.
I MARRIED AN ANGEL - Still, the most beautiful costumes, scenery, lighting I can remember. And the curtain, with lights thrown on it looked likea large venetian blind.
CAROUSEL - The costumes were a bit elaborate and rich for the characters, but they were exquisite.
STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE - The original production really gave nuance and shading to the characters. Jessica Tandy's first appearance in the white dresss as contrasted with Kim Stanley's rather tatty blue smock (at least I think it was blue?)
THE KING AND I - the original production. What else can be said!

I cannot believe that no one has mentioned Sunday In The Park With George. Those costumes (I wore the original Broadway costumes in the national tour) are hand-painted to look like part of the painting that the show is based loosely upon - A Sunday afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. They were absolutely breathtaking - especially from a close-up view, where you could see how the brush strokes had affected the colors of the material - simply stunning, Possums!

AIDA's costumes will always be my all time favorite. I adored the Wedding Dress. If I was a woman, that would be my wedding dress! (oh who am i kidding.. just to piss Bush off... I woudl wear it anyway!)
My favorite are allllll the costumes in DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES , I don't care what anyone says (I personally loved this show) about the show itself but you have to give it up for the costumes, make-up , wigs!
Millies dress in GIMME GIMME (had a replica made in emerald green for my prom...my hairs strawberry blonde, it was fabulous)
The Costumes in Boy From Oz are pretty spectacular.
NINE was ASTOUNDING with it's costumes, and the same for CABARET.
The Lion King
The Will Rogers Follies

A number of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals --
Phantom of the Opera
Sunset Boulevard
CATS
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
And some of the older musicals --
Hello Dolly!
My Fair Lady
And even the costumes for Les Miserables helped create the dramatic tableaux-like stage scenes.
All of Marin Mazzie's stuff in Passion was spectaculer as well as all the costumes in Ragtime. But I love the Victorian era so I'm a bit biased.
Hmm, Phantom's costumes are pretty great. I think the Phantom's graveyard outfit is my favorite. Also, I think Amneris' dress she wears for the start of Strongest Suit, as well as her red dress from the opening are the best dresses I've seen. Edna & Tracy's matching "coming out" dresses are also great. And I second Bebe Neuwirth in her Chicago dress, as well as the first Fred Casely, Michael Berresse in the tight pants with the open vest... Rrr!

depends what you mean by best.. Joe Machota's mamma Mia shorts are pretty nifty.....
I think the costumes from CATS are fantastic. I've always loved those!
The RENT costumes are cool- especially Angel's Santa dress with the zebra print tights and high heels.
The Taboo costumes are pretty awesome, too. And the Aida ones are just wow.

Best costume ever --
*It is the cheapest to make but draws the best "Ahhhh..." from the audience
*It fetches the best price in any auction - some running to many thousands of dollars.
*Easiest to maintain by the show's dresser for the lead role
Hugh Jackman's black t-shirt in The Boy From Oz
"depends what you mean by best.. Joe Machota's mamma Mia shorts are pretty nifty..... "
Isn't this more of a case of the person being costumed than the costume itself? :P
The costumes from the original Broadway productions of "Dreamgirls" and "42nd Street". Both designed by Theoni V. Aldredge. The colors and designs of the ladies gowns in "Dames" were simply spectacular.
Yes, I saw AS THOUSANDS CHEER. I was a dancer in Broadway musicals from 1936-1947, then left to get married and have a family and move to Israel. I was 15 years old when I started appearing in shows. Such a long time ago. My father was a pit musician, and he played in the original THOUSANDS CHEER.
Cheers,
Miriam
I completely agree RedHot. SITPWG was the first thing that came to my mind when I read this thread and I wasn't aware of how wonderful they are up close as you have explained. I think Bernadette's first scene dress (the one that opens and closes and stands on its own) is an amazing feat in costuming particularly since it was only 1984.

The single best costume I have ever seen on Broadway (of which I have been known to write of before) was designed by Theoni V. Aldredge for Chita Rivera's character in The Rink.
During the drab book scenes it was a simple blue shirtwaist dress. However when she danced deep box pleats had been hidden in the design the entire time and no one knew until we saw the great Rivera extension and wham! The skirt was actually full and opened when she would do a turn.
The show was 2 1/2 hours long and she wore one costume and we never got bored with it.
Runner-up: Charlotte's brown ensemble in the original A Little Night Music that looked like pants while standing yet appeared to be a dress while seated. (Or was it the other way around?) Anyway, the great Florence Klotz designed that one.
Ms. Klotz also did some stunning work for the ghosts in the original Follies.

No, you won't be stoned to death. Not in the least.
What about women's costumes...?
Xx
i forgot one
carla's sheet in nine
and the "dress" jane krakowski wore for the rest of the show
:)
thanks WOSQ
Well, the costumes for "The Woman" were pretty fab, but some of my favorites are:
The Girl in the Yellow Dres -- Contact
Patti LuPone's red gown for Blow Gabriel Blow in the LC revival of Anything Goes
All of Norma's stuff in Sunset -- especially the Zebra Robe a the pool scene opening of Act II
Um,
The Lion King.
If you can call those costumes - where does the costume end and the puppet begin? Love those masks too.
