I have heard so many things about Bernadette in both of those shows. Some say she was terrible in Annie Get Your Gun and she should not have won the tony. Some say she was brilliant in Annie Get Your Gun. Some people say she was annoying and was miscast in Gypsy. Some say she was phenomenal and was robbed of the tony. So my question is if you had to pick between those two shows, Which one do you think she deserved to win the tony for?

I was upset when she lost for Gypsy at the time, but looking back...I don't think she was robbed. I think she completely deserved her Tony for Annie Get Your Gun, but now I...I do honestly think Marissa Jaret Winokur deserved to win. hindsight is always 20/20, because now I realize Bernadette was miscast as Rose, even though I completely loved her at the time.
for the Tonys, you need to see who did the most or best with what they had. a lot of people probably don't think Bernadette played Rose to its full potential, while Marissa was incredibly wonderful and charming and moving as Tracy. no, I don't think Tracy is the same caliber of a role as Rose, but it comes down to who did better in their role. that's my opinion, anyway.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 12:27pmI do think she deserved the TONY for Rose. Her "My daughter can do it" scene was heart-breaking in a way that the LuPone revival's respective scene (while great for so many reasons) was not.

I think LuPone is incredible during the "My Daughter can do it" scene. She is so nervous but serious getting Gypsy ready, and you really see the character coming close to her breaking point. I love her "Louise, don't be like June!"

This is a dangerous topic, because I think she should have won for both... and Dot.... and Mabel... and The Witch.... SOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm probably not the person to ask.... but based on some not so legal footage, I still think Bernadette can rival Patti's Rose (I love both interpretations but there's something spot-on about Bernadette's Rose's Turn that I haven't heard in any other version).
So I guess to really answer your question, I say her Rose is stronger than her Annie.
(Just as Patti's Lovett is stronger than her Rose)

She was funny and bubbly as Annie (McEntire gave one of the best female performances of the last few years though when she took over) but was a force to be reckoned with as Rose. Her Rose is very divisive, some claim she was miscast but I totally disagree. She was really fantastic as Rose and delivered a performance leagues better than Winokur (who I thought was very good but obviously rode the HAIRSPRAY sweep to win).

She deserved it more for Rose (though I enjoyed her as Annie Oakley). She was certainly more worthy of the award that year than its winner, Marisa Jaret Winokur.
As much as I did like her in AGYG, Carolee Carmello should have won the Tony for Parade that year.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 10:55pmCan we let this go now? She didn't win for GYPSY, and she did for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. Enough. Ethel Merman didn't win for GYPSY either but Mary Martin won for THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Go figure. Updated On: 6/21/08 at 10:55 PM

Posted: 6/21/08 at 10:58pmHere's what my friend said to me about the Mama Rose vs. Tracy Tony battle. How many times will someone get nominated for Mama Rose, and how many times will someone like Marissa get nominated for a role like that? That really put the issue in perspective to me, and I couldn't be happier that Marissa won.

Tonys Schmonys.
Marissa Jaret Winokur went on to star in such hits as STACKED, and appeared alongside other C-list stars in DANCING WITH THE "STARS."
Lots of people whose opinions I respect and admire on this board say that Peters was miscast as Rose. I disagree. I just think she was inspired, out-of-the-box casting. I think her larger-than-life sexiness during moments like "You'll Never Get Away from Me" and "Small World," her determinism during "Some People," the clear denial and the sort of unstoppable behavior she displays during "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and finally her vulnerability, heart-break, and emotional range during "Rose's Turn" all worked together to make her Rose simply brilliant. Of course she's not a powerhouse, but in my opinion, she acted the role to perfection. I love LuPone as Rose, but I always go back to my '03 GYPSY cast recording (for Rose's songs anyways).
Still, I feel she should have won for SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE over ANNIE and GYPSY.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 11:18pmI have to agree that Bernadette was horribly miscast in Annie Get Your Gun. I later saw Rheba do it (and I honestly didn't know who she was at the time) but she blew me away in the role in comparison to Bernadette whom I adore.
