On YouTube, there a videos of Bernadette and Patti singing "Rose's Turn." Bernadette sings and acts it, starting at one place and ending in another so there are many colors to the song. She's funny, sad, hurt, angry and vulnerable. She's Bernadette playing Rose. Patti sings and stays on one level. She's angry from beginning to end, so there is no build or growth in her performance. Vulnerable she's ain't. She's Patti as Patti playing Rose.
Bernadette is a Cadillac; Patti is a Mac Truck.
If Rose is played as a monster from her first entrance, I start to wonder why someone doesn't shoot her. There are different levels in terms of book, music and lyrics, in the character. Has Arthur Laurents read the script or is he going on sense memory of the two other productions he directed? After all, he is 89.

Bernadette can barely find the energy to hit and hold the last note. Patti goes above and beyond with that note.
But again, WHY ANOTHER THREAD?

Patti goes above and beyond with that note.
That explains why dogs in the city are howling late at night!

You're not A Director--you're a TROLL and a SH*T-Stirrer
And you oughta be ashamed of yourself.
You knew perfectly well this topic had been discussed to death, yet you decided to come onto this board--ON EASTER SUNDAY, OF ALL DAYS--and throw some feces around, to see if you could make everyone upset.
You're probably masturbating as you read these posts, determined to come back and throw some more vomit in everyone's face until you ejaculate.
Well, we're onto you, TROLL, and your disgusting game.
Go on back to All That Chat--WHERE YOU BELONG--and leave our BroadwayWorld in peace.
yr pal,
Joey

Jut take a look at A Director's previous posts. He goes out of his way to insult Patti at every given chance...
Also, I have a sneaking suspicion this is just a second profile of someone who also happens to have posted on this thread. He just so happens to be a director, and a Patti hater.
Get a life.

To the original poster-
Your post is absurd and offensive for several reasons:
1) "Better" is a SUBJECTIVE judgment. Let me say it again: "BETTER" IS A SUBJECTIVE JUDGMENT. Meaning, you can't come in here and state your opinion as if it's FACT.
2) You are slamming an accomplished performer's work based on a single clip of a few minutes out of an entire performance on a YOUTUBE VIDEO! Are you kidding me?! Sit in the theatre, watch the entire performance live and then discuss your OPINIONS if you care to do so.
3) The two actresses in question have given performances of Rose that are apples and oranges. They are different. Some will prefer one over the other. But why can't they both be valid and remarkable for their own reasons?
and FINALLY,
4) Arthur Laurents didn't just READ the script, the man WROTE it. ARTHUR LAURENTS is the BOOK AUTHOR FOR "GYPSY." So, yes, I'm sure he's taken it in once or twice.
Get it together.

Does Schmecter Director really NOT know that Arthur Laurents wrote the book?
Or was he just attempting to be "clever"?
Also--Harvey Fierstein sang Rose's Turn at the Sondheim birthday tribute at the New Amsterdam--still wearing his Tevye costume. It was bizarre but kinda brilliant.

I'd like to see Seth Rudetsky do Rose's Turn.
Better yet, Seth Rudetsky doing a deconstruction of all five Broadway Roses' 'Rose's Turn's in one incredible whirlwind of brilliance.
