oh! i noticed that when he takes off his mask theres alot more uhm...'disfigurment' than when he has it on :S- because when he's wearing the mask it doesn't cover up very much, just a small portion of his face- but when he takes it off- its convering half of his face....hmmmm perhaps a major 'stress outbreak' or something :P

"What I don't understand about the movie is how when he removes his mask, there is like this giant piece of his hair missing in the front on the side and then the mask goes back on and his hair is back to normal. Did anybody else notice that?"
im not sure exactly what youre talking about, but he wears a wig, you see him putting it on right before don juan.

I heard it is like that because it represents the trance over Christine. When the mask is on, he looks decent (maybe sexy?), but when it's off he looks nasty and the trance is broken.

ally_kay, that's exactly what I was trying to say. I don't think I was very clear though. The mask is small and when he takes it off it seems like he's disfigured in areas that the mask didn't cover.
But the trance things makes sense, chinkie azn jai. That part of the movie always confused me.

People, it's Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is same guy that had a cat riding a spare tire as if it were the space shuttle.

I thought the horse was added because of the novel itself. There's no horse on stage from what I can remember so I guess the stuck it in there for kicks. Or trots.
"The mystical stuff probably would've been less obtuse if Schumacher hadn't gone so far out of his way to make the phantom less magical. It doesn't help that when the candles come out of the water it just looks like a plastic prop being pushed up by hydraulics, there's nothing magical about how it's shot."
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.
I do love the movie. The story is beautiful and the music is just amazing. The movie had its weak points; the above for starters. I also cringe during when the Phantom is noosing up Raoul to the gate and they both just stand there and sing at Christine. It's such an awkward shot. Maybe that's just me though. As much as I love it (and that loves grows each time I watch it) I just feel like some parts could have been done much, much, MUCH better.
I'll step off my soapbox now.

Gerard is indeed sex personified, despite a lazy eye that rivals Paris Hilton's.
I'd like to see Phantom of the Opera cut, the lighting dimmed down, and Inna Gadda DaVida or some insane Death Metal song put in there during the journey to the lair instead, just for kicks.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

*raises glass to the candles*
Alas, I always giggled when I saw the pipe organ in the show...AND in the movie. It's probably just me, but it always looked like one of those dinky Casio keyboards with pool wet-noodles sticking out the top. Not what I expected, but hey, it's certainly creepy.
Another question: Why was Mr. Phantom so f-ing tan in the movie! DANGIT! If I secluded myself to the depts of a cave, I wish I could turn out that dark. But nooo, I stay in the sun all day and am still like a snowman!

maybe he had some middle eastern blood in him.
but it looked like sunless tanner to me. did they have it back then?
he also could have sunbathed on the top of the opera house.
why am i putting so much thought into this?

i felt sorry for the people trapped within the corridor walls with just one arm sticking out holding a candle. were these the phantom's previous victims? and if cristine didn't adhere to the phantom's wishes was she doomed to become an arm sticking out of a wall?

His raven black hair is a wig. Watch the scene just before Don Juan when he's in his Phantom lair putting the mask on. There's a little foam head with another wig on it. Apparantly he can compose symphonies and bind them in pretty leather envelopes not to mention make some sweet wigs but can't snag some Rogaine.
