The Color Purple- Shug Avery

I was thinking about who would make a good Shug Avery in The Color Purple. I Think patina miller would be good in the part. Does anyone else agree?

That would have to depend on Patina's schedule because she is still on Madam Secretary.

Yes, Patina would absolutely be sensational in the role, but I doubt she'd be a replacement in a featured role right now.

If they ever did a movie version of the musical version, I'd love her to star as Shug or even Celie!

Well, I know she is great friends with Cynthia. And JHUD plays her, who is arguably a bigger star than Patina

Yeah, but Jennifer Hudson is originating the role in the revival and will likely receive a Tony nomination. She wouldn't be a replacement Shug either, had she not originated it.

Well yeah she's a bigger star than Patina, but at this point in her career Patina has a Tony from her last appearance on Broadway so it would be strange for her next appearance to be as a replacement in that role (not the lead even).

I could see a Toni Braxton type coming in as a replacement or Kelly Rowland is TB is too old

toni braxton may be a little too old for this production. because i think they tried to make the leads younger for this generation. but if this was like the original show, i could see her play shug.

Yes all of the leads are younger in this production, clearly a John Doyle touch, as is the decision not to age anyone throughout the story.
