Bette Midler ?@BetteMidler 16m
Congrats to @CicelyTyson on her well deserved Tony. I was not at the awards. Dined out with @AlecBaldwin, @ScarlettJohansson and @FionaShaw.

Posted: 6/11/13 at 2:19pmIt's called sarcasm. All of the people she listed weren't nominated for a Tony for their performances this year.

Posted: 6/11/13 at 2:22pmShe really does need to get over it. She's really coming off very embittered. She felt that just because she's Bette Midler she deserved a nomination by default? You don't see Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson carrying on this way...at least not in public.

Further proves the point that she possibly didn't watch the show at all.

Posted: 6/11/13 at 2:36pmHuh. The way I read it, her tweet just comes across as a good-natured joke at her own expense. After all, she congratulates Cicely and sounds sincere. I guess I'm missing the bitterness. This just seems similar to Nathan Lane jokingly bemoaning his lack of a nomination in years past, on the broadcast itself, if memory serves.

@Someday. I do see your point. Maybe bitter is not the right choice of words. Her congratulations to Tyson does come off as sincere and she should have left it at that.
When you add that last swipe at humor onto the fact that she pulled comp tickets for members of the American Theater Wing after she didn't receive a nomination it just comes off as sour grapes, at least to me.

Yes, Nathan did joke about it on a broadcast. And Patti LuPone has several times made snippy comments about not winning, prior to Gypsy. And also, Elaine Stritch, while being a lower profile actress, has made her share of comments.
And of course, let's not forget the Hunter Foster comments re: Cat Zeta-Jones.

I think it's funny. She didn't really go to dinner with any of them.
(If she did, I want pictures!)
Are you horrified that Carolee Carmello tried to rip Patina's Tony out of her hands after the show?
That was a joke, too. All in good fun.

I like one of the twitter responses that asks Bette which one of them she ate last.

I also took it as a joke.
It reminded me of Patton Oswalt when he didn't get an Oscar nomination for Young Adult.
He also tweeted something like this, but he named other Oscar snubees.

I guess Alan Cumming was even more bitter by saying he'd present and then mentioning it to 7+ million people on the actual broadcast?
Or are we selectively deciding when it is humorous?

I think the point she's making (if she's even trying to make one with that joke) is that she's in good company.
There are a lot of talented folks who don't get nominated for awards. Happens all the time.

Exactly! And I loooove that picture of Carolee and Patina, that's the attitude people should take about these awards, they are so fun to celebrate and get into but as long as people have a perspective on it.
Taz, so happy you brought up Patton Oswalt's tweet! The "Charlize and Tilda just pulled up in a stolen police car" makes me crack up every time for some reason:

Posted: 6/11/13 at 3:50pm"She" didn't pull any of the TONY voters' tickets from her show. Those kinds of decisions are made by the producers (and she is not one). And it was purely a financial one. To have to give up some 800 (x2) tickets for voters to see your show when it's not even in the running makes no sense. Why not sell them to audience members who want to see the show. And now that they have announced they have recouped, it seems like it was the right decision.

I am wrong. In re-reading the initial tweet and the responses from my fellow BWWers I would have to admit that yes, I am wrong on this. I stand corrected and I'm not above owning up to that.
