Fascinating article. I am shocked that the play has never received one single Tony nomination.

Wow! I can't believe this has never been nominated for anything before!

Well I can't speak for the earlier revivals (that article does paint them as botched productions that were pretty poorly received), but the last two prior to this one were indeed pretty dreadful evenings at the theatre as I recall. And as the article mentions, the original was produced before the creation of the Tony Awards.
*Side note: I hadn't thought about it, but I had no idea Piper Laurie is 82. For some reason I apparently thought she was younger than she actually was when she did Carrie, as I would have put her mid-70s tops*
The only production the article doesn't go into too much detail about is the 2005 revival. In my mind Jessica Lange sounds like a perfect Amanda. She can turn from steely determination to tragic fragility on a dime. And as an American Horror Story fan I can't think of a better Laura than Sara Paulson, who I think is greatly underrated. They made some amazing onscreen chemistry in Asylum and their mother/daughter dynamic in Coven was fascinating. I can't imagine that they weren't able to build a satisfying relationship over the course of an evening. Cristian Slater isn't a favorite of mine and sounds a bit miscast. Could anyone who saw this production weigh in on what worked and what didn't?
Exactly what I was thinking SidebySide.
I didn't even know they were in a production until I knew that they were putting it on this go around and said how perfect Lange and Paulson would have been for it! Imagine my surprise and disappointment on missing it when I looked it up!

Very shrewd public relations move...the timing couldn't be better since the Tony nominating committee meets today. Let's hope they are not influenced by this or large ads in the Sunday Times (i.e. Cripple and Raisin in the Sun) and keep an open mind. My choices for Outstanding Revival would, however, include Glass as well as Winslow Boy, Machinal,No Man's Land and Of Mice and Men. So many worthy choices.
You know what must've been really embarrassing? The poster for the original 1950 movie presumptuously declared that it would get nominated in all 4 acting categories. The film didn't receive one single nod. And then a year later, the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire got 12 nominations, including for its 4 main actors, with 3 of them winning.
