The How I Paid For College appreciation thread

Posted: 1/30/05 at 1:49amThis book was recommended here on the message board and I just finished it and loved it! There was some laugh-out-loud moments, but the best humor was more subtle. I grinned throughout the entire story. The book (for those who don't know) concerns Edward, a New Jersey high school senior who loves theatre and dreams of attending Julliard but whose father has told him he will only pay for college if Edward studies business. Edward and his diverse group of friends proceed to find creative, not-necessarily-legal means to raise money for his tuition. Musical theatre lovers, you must read it. It is clever and funny and touching. Who else loved this book? The author is Marc Acito.

Posted: 1/30/05 at 1:57amI loved every minute of it, except the ending. Everything was too "Cookie Cutter" perfect. I mean, he even met his long time idol. I rolled my eyes severly at the end but besides that AMAZING novel!!!

Posted: 1/30/05 at 10:52amI got it as a Christmas present and have read about half of it. I'll probably finish it at some point...I have a habit of starting books and never finishing them.

Posted: 2/19/05 at 1:18amJC, you might pick up Joe Keenan's "Blue Heaven." In an interview Acito said that it is one of the books that influenced him the most (the other was "Bridget Jones's Diary"). You might also try "Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress" by Susan Jane Gilman, who's a female Marc Acito. Happy reading. Bart
