The Last 5 Years OOBC or 2013 album?

I have heard great things about The Last 5 Years being a great musical and it having a great score. I was wondering which album is better The Original Off-Broadway recording or the new 2013 cast recording? Which is better to start with to introduce me into the show? Thanks

The original cast recording is a more faithful representation of the original score. And it'll be hard to get Norbert Leo Butz's Jamie out of your ear once you hear him. It makes many of Adam Kantor's choices seem a bit manic and strange. To my virgin ear, they have the same orchestrations, so you'd have to wait for the film's soundtrack in order to hear a different representation of the score.

The 2013 feels more modern, and I think Betsy Wolfe has a much better voice than Sherie Rene Scott. Adam Kantor sings much more emotionally than Norbert Leo Butz. But of course, NLB has a crystal clear, gorgeous voice. I would test out both on Amazon, and get the one that sounds better to you. I have both and listen to both all the time. The orchestrations are fantastic all around.

Honestly, if you can get ahold of a recording with Lauren Kennedy & Norbert, listen to that. Nobody's done it better than Lauren did.

Anything w Norbert is always gonna be my choice. For what its worth, i have and truly love this recording.
