Having just again watched my dvd of "...A PIECE OF WORK" in early August, I remain in awe of the Rivers take on tragedy. It's both a comedy technique, and something close to a personal philosophy. The documentary always reacquaints me with her coping skills, which were fierce. We throw around words like "inspired by" and I get it, the idea of a comedienne inspiring seems arch. But whenever I need a lift, I watch a chunk of the documentary, and she reminds me: make it happen. Then make it happen again. And again. She took everything -- everything! -- into her own hands. Took full responsibility for every aspect of her life. And life itself. That's why she could mock the handicapped, the downtrodden, even maybe especially the tragic. She believed in getting back up again. The worst aspect of her death has been her inability to comment on it. Hell, to do 15 minutes on it. She'd stand there and say "Wake the f--k up, bitch!" And that funeral, oh yeah, she would've kvelled.
Which is why Howard Stern's eulogy was so perfect.
