"This whole thing has turned what was a beautiful remembrance into exactly what the league didn't want - an ugly, crass contest over who is more deserving of the honor."
I would imagine this is all making Joan very, very happy. Sirius/XM played an interview w/Seth Rudetsky this morning, and in the interview Joan commented how she would never expect any honor like Kennedy Center, etc. I think this "snub" by the League, and the push from her fans would please her very much.
I think wherever she is, she's loving every single second of this and is putting it into her act right now.

Joan's death hit me very hard. I have been emotional and down in the dumps ever since finding out. This was like a slap in the face. I can only imagine how it's made Melissa feel.
The Broadway League is VERY rude on the phone, FYI. But I've called!

The Broadway League was terrible yesterday when I called. The woman who answered was very rude.
iluvtheatertrash-I feel the same. And she wasn't sick-she was in perfectly good health. I think if she'd been sick or something I'd get it. But she wasn't-it was sudden.

VERY rude, indeed. I should've asked for her name. She was also rude to a few friends who called.
I'm so glad they made the right decision. Sadly, it took them far too long to do so and they still look just plain awful. But I'm thrilled to be able to stand on 45th tonight and see Joan's face glowing....

We don't want it now. You're only doing it in a grudging manner. I bet you'll only hold it for 58 seconds.
Hey-sometimes when a community comes together they can accomplish something!!! See all of you on 45th!!!!
I'm really fvcking proud of all of us. I'm glad this thread and that petition and everyone else who spoke out actually accomplished this. It feels really wonderful to be able to give something back to someone who has, I feel, given me so much my entire life.

YOU might not want it, Gotham. But WE do. Whatever it took to make it happen, I'm thrilled.
If anyone wants to meet up on 45th, share an ugly cry and then go have a cocktail with me to salute to Joan, please let me know!

They were forced to back down, and I'm thrilled.

My response was Joan Rivers style sarcasm.

Sarcasm is hard on the web sometimes. :P
So happy that I teared up... Definitely going to have quite the ugly cry at 6:45 tonight.

Yes it is. I should have included a /s tag.
I'm very happy Joan is getting the nod she deserves. It's not easy to write and star in two Broadway shows.
Bravo to all who signed the petition, called the League and left messages comments for them.
We are ALL Joan Rangers now.

Time to forgive the League and move on. If Joan's death taught us anything, it's that life is too short. And any day can be our last.
Sometimes you can change the world with enough passion. I'm thrilled, and I'm sure Joan has loved every minute of this. The honor is not just for Joan, but for everyone who helped with this decision.
Patrick Healy at the NY Times seems to say that other than the thousands of people signing petition and posting online, the turning point was a handwritten letter from costume designer William Ivey Long (who is also the current chair of the American Theatre Wing) to executives at the Shubert Organization.
NY TIMES: Broadway Theaters Will Dim Lights for Joan Rivers After All
That was the only right thing to do.
I bet that the great Ms. Rivers would've loved that even after her death she would create such controversy.
F#@ck the establishment that never gave Ms. Rivers the respect she deserved. People loved her and that what counts. She certainly got the last laugh.
I'm so sad that she's gone.

dreaming and I will be outside the Music Box on 45th.
If anyone would like to join us after, we're going to have a drink and toast to Joan. We've never met, but so what? Joan would love it!

Or at least, I'll be going for a cocktail! Not sure if dreaming can come. But if anyone wants to toast Joan with me, come say hi! I'll be wearing a blue and white tee-shirt with a red hoodie vest!
I am absolutely THRILLED that the proverbial tide has turned! I have to applaud each and every one who took the time out to make this happen! She most definitely deserved this honor. BRAVO!!

I will be there at 6:45pm tonight to honor Joan. I'm glad she will get the respect and tribute she rightfully deserves.
I happy to be part of a community that can admit they were wrong and make things right.
