I have already said my opinion many times, but since there is a thread about it, I guess I will say it once more. His acting is GREAT, his lower register is GREAT, his higher register makes me cringe. The thing that bugs me about it most, is that he goes into his falsetto SO early. I mean, notes where people are still in their chest voice, he uses his falsetto. Also, parts (like in Evita) where he needs to show some power, he uses his falsetto and it is not strong at all.

Is anyone else old enough to remember the tv show "Chicago Hope?"
Every actor on that show was so over the top, it was painful to watch. Mandy Patinken started singing towards the end of the show's run, mind you he was a doctor and it was at that point I started to loathe his voice. I had seen him in Evita and loved him until he ruined it for me forever.

I love him and everything he does (Yes, I love his Buddy's Blues. YES, I love Mamaloshen.). But you are right Priest, he is the female (crap, I mean...male ) Patti LuPone.

I never agree with people that say "you either love him, or you hate him." Not just about a performer, about a show, a food, whatever. I think it's a stupid thing to say, no one knows what everyone thinks. Anyway, after saying that, I don't love him or hate him. I can take or leave him.

You kids should know that Patti and Mandy adore each other and want to do a concert together. That would be awesome!

They are both fabulous singers, passionate people and certifiably insane (and I mean that in a good way).

I can see why people find him odd, and notice how peculiar he has become over the years (it has kinda become a schtick to do his crazy Mandy stuff). But I adore his song interp and his performances in SITPWG and Evita. His Seurat is enough for me to respect him for the rest of my life. I also have has 2 of his albums, which I enjoy very much.

Oh, I must also mention Myths and Hymns and the hauntingly funny "Sisyphus".

Since seeing him at the Helen Hayes (the New York Times, as I recall, loved him--or SOMEONE did and set up the entire City for an ongoing nightmare with Mandy on stage in many more things), I concluded he'd be far happier if he'd just rent out the space and sing to himself in a mirror. I could have spent the money seeing a real performer. But I have a much better idea, and it would be a sensation. He should just walk on stage and masturbate. FAR FAR more interesting.

But ultimately, if the audience makes no difference and he's singing to himself....who cares? Compare and contrast: who do you want to SEE AND HEAR on Broadway (since one does both in a musical)? Hugh Jackman or Mandy Patinkin?

Hands down the most exciting man on a Broadway stage in the last five years is Hugh Jackman.

Hands down one of the greatest musical theatre performers of all-time, like him or hate him, is Mandy Patinkin.

I'd much rather see him perform than Jackman.

I think he's brilliant. Especially in Sunday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, The Wild Party... and I <3 Sisyphus... and some of his solo work is fantastic...

The performance that Hugh Jackman gave in "The Boy From Oz" and Mandy's performance in "Sunday" are on two TOTALLY different levels. First, id like to see mr. jackman take a stab at a piece anywhere near the complexity level of Sunday, and THEN I'll compare the two. For now, Mandy is on top IMO.

Apples and oranges, people. How the heck can you compare George(s) to Curly? They're two different things.

Theatreboy, if you're implying that Jackman can't handle anything complex, acting-wise, I seriously disagree. But Erskineville Kings doesn't exactly have wide distribution, so it's not like I can readily point to it as an example.

Although I can see why you'd say something about him irking you, I've got a special place in my heart for him. Grew up in a house where my mother absolutely adored Mandy. Listened to all the cds, went with her to Westbury Music Hall several times to see him perform and still talk about the concerts with my mother. So I don't think I could ever NOT enjoy seeing him or hearing him perform.

Almost halfway through the show, he walks off unnaounced and returns and starts the exact show over for about 15 min.

I love his voice. I've only seen him in musicals, and have always enjoyed his performances. But that's.... quite a story you got there, PB ENT.
