The role of Usnavi will be played by Shaun Taylor-Corbett
The role of Piragua guy will be played by Tony Chiroldes
The role of Daniela will be played by Blanca Camacho
Well, I always like to see understudies, but it is hard not to be disappointed when Lin is out. He has been out what? only 5 or 6 times (not including vacation) and I caught two of those performances. I was happy that Shaun was on rather than Javier, just so I could see someone different.
Shaun was great! He understands the humor and sensitive sides to Usnavi and has great chemistry with Karen, Olga, and Robin. He fit the part very well, and I would have no problem with seeing him again. When I saw Javier I thought he was good but a lot of the attention normally on Lin I spent on the rest of the cast. With Shaun, I focused on Usnavi. It's good to know the show is in good hands if Lin leaves.
Blanca was okay. Her accent isn't as strong as Daniela, which I think takes a little bit away from the role, and it went in and out, which was distracting. Still, she did her job and the audience loved her. I missed Andrea though? Hope she's not sick.
Tony Chiroldes is funny. I don't know what else to say. Whether he is the Piragua Guy or is normal ensemble part, he is this little dorky/creepy guy and it fits perfectly. Make sure to watch him when he is in his normal role (especially during The Club and Carnaval del Barrio). Lots of laughs. His Piragua guy and Eliseo's are very different. He has a much stronger personality, while Eliseo seems sweeter and more sensitive. Both are enjoyable.
Carlos still cracks in Inutil and Blackout, I don't know if he has something chronic, but it is very distracting and disappointing. He doesn't seem to be enjoying the show and it takes a lot away from Kevin and Nina's conflict. In my opinion, he is the weakest link.
The rest of the cast was on fire, especially Robin, Karen, and Olga. I saw a lot of new faces in the ensemble tonight, including Marcus and Noemi, and for the first time I saw Michael Balderrama. Everyone is into the show 100% and their passion shows. It's a great night (or day) of theater every time!
Unfortunately, this was probably my last time before school...
P.S. Lotto was empty today, maybe 50 people tops!
