The Other Josh Cohen

Has anyone else seen this show? I caught it earlier this week and can't stop thinking about it. It's such a delightful little show, with a great message and an extremely catchy score. There's a studio recording out with everyone from freaking Chita Rivera to Jenn Colella. Definitely recommend if you're looking for an Off-Broadway show to see!

I saw this in Rochester at the Geva Theatre and liked it a lot. It’s funny and entertaining. I can’t say that any of the songs really stuck with me afterwards, but maybe I need to revisit them! I’m glad Steve Rosen made the transfer to NY as I thought he was great; it looks like the rest of the cast is different, though.

I left the theater thinking how much I loved "Neil Life" and "Samuel Cohen's Family Tree"

I keep seeing ads for this show and it looks really fun... maybe I'll try to pick up a ticket sometime next week. I feel like this show appeared out of nowhere.

Glad to read positive comments here for the show. However, they have a one minute clip on their website. It’s one of those clips were a song is playing in the background and there is a bunch of scenes edited together one right after the other. I know it’s not fair to judge on that, but, I was going to buy tickets for my partner’s birthday, but after looking at that clip, I decided not to. So maybe I should rethink this. If any of the people here who saw it and liked it and hasn’t been on their website, it would be interesting to me if you would watch that same clip and give your comments about it here. It would be interesting, for the people who really liked the show, to review that clip on the show’s website. Thx.

Yes, I agree. Don't base your decision on that clip.

tbh, I've been the site before and never bothered even watching that clip before or after I went until you asked about it. Seems like a job for whoever does the marketing for the show, but generally I think word of mouth, critic's reviews, print ads, etc. all have more effect on the show itself. I don't think a lot of people even bother visiting the sites for the shows themselves, let alone base their purchase decisions off the content on those sites.

Oh well - it's a limited engagement through the end of April at this point, so I don't think they're thinking that much about updating the marketing for it. Like I said before, critic's reviews and word of mouth will probably do more than any kind of minor marketing update might accomplish, and as far I can tell all of those have been overwhelmingly positive.

Ethel, I had the same feeling after watching the clip and I waffled back and forth on whether or not to watch it a lot, but I ultimately did since the word of mouth was so good, and even if I didn't like it, the ticket prices were low enough that I could justify spending the money to at least give it a shot.

But I'm really glad I saw it, as it really is just a charming show that leaves you smiling. I had also listened to the first song on the cast recording, and it got me interested enough without spoiling anything (though if you do want to see it, I would avoid going much farther than the first three or so tracks). And the music has actually stayed with me more than a lot of other shows this season--I actually found the songs overall more memorable than those of The Prom which I had seen the day before and also enjoyed a lot.

Really enjoyed this show. Also, had never been to Westside Theater, and I thought it was great -- perfect, intimate space for this.

My only complaint was that one-year-ago-Josh-Cohen, while engaging and funny, seemed to be having some issues with the songs. It was a little hard to tell; it was mainly when the two Josh Cohens were harmonizing (which was fairly frequent), but they seemed a little off from each other, and sometimes I couldn't pick out the words. It looked to me like one-year-ago-Josh was the issue, because current-Josh just seemed much more confident. After the show, I looked at the playbill and saw that the understudy was filling in for one-year-ago-Josh, so I assume that was the issue.

I had a great time and laughed a lot, but I didn't walk away humming any of the music. Even so, I'd recommend this highly to anyone looking for an enjoyable 90 minutes -- if you're like me, you'll walk away from this with a big smile on your face.
