Does anyone else agree that it's complete insanity that The Pirate Queen wasn't nominated for any Tony's. Especially for production design like set, lighting, and wardrobe?
Ok, so I'm a Pirate Queen fan, but I'm still gonna say this:
Your screen name--listen to it.

And also considering that you just joined.....
The show was a MESS and the lack of nominations did not surprise me AT ALL....
I thought it should have been nominated for scenic design. I knew it wasn't gonna happen though.
Of course the show deserved a few nods such as those previously mentioned. The point of the total Tony shun was to show the producers and writers that great production values do not excuse sh*tty writing. Ever.
It's closed. For good.
Who can say
Broadway's been
Changed for the better?
I doubt it really
has changed at all
But, because of Avenue Q
we have been changed For Good
:)
THE PIRATE QUEEN closed. It's now in the history books as the most expensive flop in Broadway history. At least it's in the history books (for now, at least) and will at least merit an inclusion whenever Ken Mandelbaum finally writes a sequel to his sensational "Not Since CARRIE: Forty Years of Broadway Musical Flops" book.
Nothing more; nothing less.
Linda Balgord should at least be given the title of The Queen of Flops (she was in the original casts of PASSION and the recent revival of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES as well as the flopped 1996-97 1st Nat'l US Tour of SUNSET BLVD).
I agree that its unfortunate it got ZERO noms. I agree that it deserved some of the lesser ones. But that's the politics of the Tony's, I guess. Stuff like that always happens. In the case of the Pirate Queen, its not tragic.

I could not agree more that it DEFINATELY deserved nominations (if not a win or two) for lighting, set designs, even costuming!
I am also extremely upset it is closing already. I can't even believe it. I saw it on Broadway and loved it. It was fabulous and just as good as the stuff I saw on the Tony's.
Ugh. Sad story.
For those of you who enjoyed PQ, I'm very glad you did. It always sucks to go the theatre and NOT enjoy a show. So no offense is intended by the following contrary opinion...
PQ did not deserve any nominations for its design. Good design is not about spending a lot of money, it's about designing in a manner that helps enhance the theatrical experience, by facilitating the actors in telling their story, lending theatrical wonder, capturing a time period or mood, focusing attention on particular action, etc. PQ's design was, like the overall production, a big and expensive but unfocused mess. I don't even think it managed to make the show the "spectacle" that it sought to be. The "ship set" was clunky, and the costumes garish. It just didn't work for me and I was glad that other designers received recognition instead.
Just my opinion.
Sorry, double post.
I could not agree more that it DEFINATELY deserved nominations
There is very little as annoying as people putting spelling and grammar errors in capital letters. Such as DEFINATELY or ALOT. It's almost like they're screaming "LOOK AT MY ERRORS!".
I'd've nominated Pirate Queen for costume and choreography, but I'm not that sad that it was snubbed.
I would have liked to see Hadley Fraser get a supporting actor nomination, I think he is a brilliant new talent who deserved the recognition. Also, unlike poor Steph he actually had a decent song to sing (I'll Be There) and his role gave him some opportunities to act.
I agree that the costumes, while being an amazing technical achievement, were in the end just a a lot of money being thrown at no vision.
It seemed to me that Pirate Queen's box office went into a steep decline the week that the Tony nominations came out. I wonder if a costume, orchestration and best supporting actor nomination would have given them enough momentum to keep running through the summer.

Hadley never could have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor because he wasn't in that category. The nominating committee (justly, in my opinion) considered him for Lead Actor.
And the lighting alone in PQ was not only the best of this season, but the best in recent memory. The fact that Kenneth Posner was not even in the conversation for a nomination, let alone the win, was an absolute crime.
That being said, it was decided a long while back that PQ wouldn't get that nom or any other for that matter.
Unfortunate, but such is the business/politics of Broadway theater.
