I didn't realize anyone was still paying attention to this
Updated.
If you were a REAL fan, you would have driven that hour to see it, and loved all 60 minutes of it!
Wow, $142 million is a lot higher than I expected its total gross to be. But it is telling that 2/3 of that came from overseas.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

In what way? Honestly not being snarky, just don't understand the comment.
So is Sweeney on it's way to being a hit? It has made nearly three times it's estimated budget (though I understand there were sfx over-runs) back at the box office alone. I should imagine that DVD sales etc will be fairly strong as well...
Just that normally musicals do not do well overseas.
Hairspray did $200 million wolrdwide, only 40% came from overseas.
RENT did $31 million worldwide, only 8% of that was foreign.
Don't believe all you read about pre-production costs. These are usually rounded up. The studio accountants justify their keep by trying to prove that even with multi-million dollar grosses the films are not profitable.

Just some more numbers from some of the more recent movie musicals:
The Producers: Worldwide gross = $38,058,335, %49 foreign
Dreamgirls: Worldwide gross = $154,566,866, %33.1 foreign
Across The Universe: Worldwide gross = $28,288,119, %13.9 foreign
The Phantom of The Opera: Worldwide gross =$154,648,887, %66.8 foreign
It's interesting that Phantom also did better overseas. Maybe because the musical is so well known around the world?
I would guess a lot of Phantom's money came from Britian, where Andrew Lloyd Webber is probably a bigger star.
The number that surprises me most in that list is Hairspray. I guess just the John Travolta and Zac Efron fans? It can't be the musical itself that has that much more of a draw than the other films... is it?
Of course PHANTOM did well overseas. It's one case where NOT understanding the lyrics could be considered a distinct advantage.
