Is the film still opening in more theaters on Jan 11?? That was the plan, to go even wider on Jan 11.
Any movie that's doing over a million dollars in 1200 theaters on January 2nd is doing fine. Sweeney is going to chug along, unlike The Producers, Rent or Phantom.
If it gets a Best Picture Oscar Nomination, and wins the Golden Globe for Best Actor and Picture it'll add theaters and and be a catch-up movie. American Beauty did the same thing the year it opened. It made 31 million after its first 4 weeks, Sweeny's made 32 million in two weeks. American Beauty ended up with 130 million domestic, and over 300 million internatonally.

For what it's worth, it looks like Sweeney has already surpassed Rent's entire domestic box office.

Wow. Rent really DID do pathetically terrible at the box office. And it was in more theaters than Sweeney is in right now.

It seems like Sweeney is well on it's way to earning at least 50 million, if not more.
And if you think Rent's numbers were bad, the total domestic gross for The Producers was only $19,398,532 according to Box Office Mojo.
I'd love to see Sweeney get up to the high 50's (million)...it really deserves to be up there in the top 10 with Moulin Rouge, Chicago, etc...and with amazing reviews and world of mouth, i think it could happen. I've seen it twice so far and i'll probably go again!
Considering the subject matter, it's chugging along. And none of this figures in foreign, DVD sales, cable, network, pay per. I wouldn't cry for them.
On a totally aside note, while checking the B.O. score for Sweeney, I noticed "Juno" has made 35,000,000 so far (on I would expect a minuscule budget).
Any bets on who's been hired to adapt it for the stage?
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Meat Loaf, I'd wager.
Bumped with updated o.p.
Apparently more theatres are getting it tomorrow?
Sweeney's up to $39,681,527.
And, check out the Playbill article that reports the soundtrack is now moved into the top twenty of the Billboard 200 list. Imagine how many more people are listening to Sweeney right now than was ever possible through the stage show. I call that a success by any standard.

No major expansion this week after all.
It did expand somewhat. It's in 1,323 theaters. I hear they are really counting on the Globes tonight.
Yeah, I was hoping they'd really open the gates. I hope Depp winning will be enough, because with the absurd amount of buzz around Juno (why? It was cute. Sorta funny.) I think the chances of it getting Best Picure, Musical/Comedy are looking slimmer.
I'm afraid it's "cool" to like Juno. The same thing happened with Little Miss Sunshine, a fun little movie that won far more awards (not Globes, but in general), and acclaim, than it should have, simply because it was the 'it' movie that year. Bitter? A lil' bit.
Depp and Sweeney won globes! If only there was a real ceremony. It wouldve been nice to see him accept it.
Oh well. This is good news for the possible expansion.
I can see Sweeney Todd finishing 6th on that last.
1. Grease
2. Chicago
3. Hairspray
4. Rocky Horror
5. Dreamgirls
6. Sweeney Todd
The producers and Steve S. are not crying. The film has garnered praise and acclaim and will make its money back eventually. That, in and of itself is a miracle. And to b on a list five below Grease, with all the blood spilled in Sweeney is damn amazing.
Sondheim must be thrilled.
Still without a major expansion, which unfortunately looks pretty much impossible at this point without perhaps a slew of Oscar noms, Sweeney did not get too much of a domestic bump from its Golden Globe wins.
However, overseas, the film opened in the U.K., Japan, and South Korea. Playing on 739 screens, it managed to make $6.6 million, which is a good sign. It was number one in Japan and South Korea, according to Variety--Tim Burton and musicals are always big in Japan.
With weekend estimates in, Sweeney passes the $50 million mark domestically. It's definitely petering out here. But overseas and DVD sales should add a good chunk of change to that. Not to mention the CD and other merchandise. All this, combined with the fact that we now have this wonderful film to watch any time we like, makes me a very happy man.
I saw it again today (better every time, I think), and the theater has cut the shows by half. I expect it to leave most of our local theatres in the next few weeks. It really is a fantastic movie, and I can't wait for the DVD.
Any rumor on DVD release dates?

It's over domestically for this film. If it were to eke out a few more weeks even at its current tally, it won't get much beyond 55mil, and that is not a good gross (its budget, with overruns, was over 65mil plus the thirty mil for marketing). And I'm not sure its International gross is going to be all that good, and I'm also not sure it's going to be a big DVD title (DVD sales have really taken a plunge anyway in the last two years). Much as people would like to spin this, the spin has spun, I'm afraid. I enjoyed the film for the most part, but its audience was and is clearly limited. The DVD release will be, I'm sure, sooner than people think.
The film needed to get over the 100 million mark to enjoy profit, shame but at least its a great film

Considerably over 100 million - closer to 150.

So can we finally admit that the movie tanked?
In America, at least?
