Wow, you're so friendly, ZONEACE.
It's nice to see that we can have a discussion on here without resorting to name calling and personal attacks.
I didn't say anything about the shows being "small." By "arsty," I meant that SPRING AWAKENING was the less commercial, less easily tourable, making money show than LEGALLY BLONDE.
9 TO 5 is the more commercial, easily tourable, cash cow on the road up against something like BILLY ELLIOT.
By not nominating LEGALLY BLONDE or 9 TO 5 for Best Musical, the Nominating Committee was keeping the money grubbing touring house voters from voting their wallets instead of voting for the most deserving show.

for your analogy to even be REMOTELY accurate this year, the show the committee would have had to have been protecting is Next to Normal. that's the less commercial, not easily tourable show, Billy Elliott is the big Cash Cow that has road producers drooling.
but nice try.

NEXT TO NORMAL is the GREY GARDENS of this year. It will win one or two Tonys.
BILLY ELLIOT is the SPRING AWAKENING. It will win big.
9 TO 5 is the LEGALLY BLONDE. It will be shafted.

It's nice that the Tony's will pimp out Dolly for ratings, but refused to honor her show with more noms. Mighty big of Dolly to agree to do that. I agree it will further confuse those who think Dolly is in the show. Bad enough a few of the large photos outside the Marquis show Dolly standing with the women.

At least I'm backing up my arguments. All you seem to do is spout off anger and nasty words.
Get off the computer and go kick a wall.

I think it's funny that this whole thread is based upon what Patricia updated.
On her facebook she wrote "Dolly and cast will be performing on the Tonys" so I am confused as to where the whole "opening montage" rumor comes from.
Either way, I'm SO glad they will get to perform... and I also hope [tos] gets a chance to do something as well!
EDIT TO ADD: Never mind... I just read the first post over. Not confused anymore LOL

I don't think anything that Foster has said on this thread calls for any of the ridiculously nasty comments he has received.
I think his take on the LEGALLY BLONDE situation is rather interesting, and while I don't necessarily agree that the same happened this season (since I believe that BILLY ELLIOT is quite popular even for non-NY audiences), I think WannaBe makes a good point.
Either way, the Tony show-runners would be smart to have as many musical numbers as they can. Also, why aren't the plays allowed to do scenes anymore? I love the LOST TREASURES DVD with all the clips from the plays that performed at the Tonys at one point or another.

Posted: 5/17/09 at 11:19pmFoster- I agree with most of your analogy, however I honesty think 9 to 5 is going to be no easier to tour than mary poppins was. From the clips I've seen (haven't gotten to go see it yet) the set seems to rely heavily on things coming out of the various trap doors.

Posted: 5/17/09 at 11:25pmDidn't the 9 TO 5 set keep breaking down early in its run? That doesn't say "easily transportable" to me.

Margot Serena Pilar DOES NOT approve of the negative vibes coming from the beginning of this thread.
Margot Serena Pilar thinks you all overlooked SHREK THE MUSICAL as the "easily tourable bubble gum musical" of the season. Many more tweens (who control the airwaves with Miley Cyrus and TV stations with American Idol) have seen SHREK, or its multiple sequels, over a dated 80's movie. And thus, said Wicked-loving crowds would more readily see SHREK on tour, than 9 TO 5.
Margot Serena Pilar approves this FACT.

Phyllis Rogers Stone has seen just one post by Margot Serena Pilar and already hates her.
The thing is - if it's all about deserving, and deliberately shafting and this and that (and this are all arguments that just get readjusted year after year) - why do any of you give a crap in the first place?
Understanding that yes, there are politics involved, but if a group of shows are nominated for best musical (or really if a group of whatever are nominated in whatever category) aren't ANY of them deserving for the sheer sake that they were nominated as the BEST in the first place? And if not, and it's a foregone conclusion ("Billy Elliot WILL win", "9 to 5 was shafted to make for Billy Elliot", etc), then I repeat, why do any of you care?

I totally understand what Foster is saying. I think others are confused about his statements because BILLY ELLIOT is quite a different scenario than we've seen in a LONG time. It's a legit family show which isn't at all geared for kids. It has spectacle, it has charm, it has heart. It has stunningly talented kids, and theatre-favorite adult performers. It has Elton John. It has touring potential. It has success, financially, critically, and with audience response.
In other words, it crosses SO many categories. It's not just the "big-budget musical monster" that other shows have been. It's that, plus everything else.
So in that regard, this year is unlike other years' Best Musical competition.
I don't think BILLY ELLIOT needs "protecting." But if 9 TO 5 were to have been nominated, and it did get the road votes et al, I think the theatre community would be SCREAMING with conspiracy and outrage if it won.

Didn't someone "in the know" confirm a few seasons back that the road votes are a small percentage of the voter populous?

And I am convinced that Margot Serena Pilar is Suede from last season of Project Runway.
