Someone once posted Tyne's entire production on YouTube in little clips and I wish they were still up. I watched the whole show with my jaw on the floor. Her vocals were not the best, but, boooooy, did she ever nail the acting requirements! Possibly my favorite Rose, acting wise. Betty's my favorite vocally.
Betty Hutton's "Some People" would be like Liza's on crack cocaine instead of regular.
ComingUpRoses2, I think you may be right about the Buckley clip. She's noticeably slimmer than in other clips I've seen of the Papermill production. I guess the clip is from when she did Gypsy in Arizona in the early 1990s.
I'm not sure what's up with that Tyne Daly clip either, but she did NOT weigh that much when she played Rose out of town. She must have gained a lot of weight during the pre-Broadway tour and Broadway run. I saw her and the full OBC in L.A before they went to NY. She was still fairly thin then. That clip must be late in her Broadway run (and she put on a whole lotta pounds in just one year).
Here's another clip from her doing Rose's Turn on Broadway. Notice how she's thinner than in the "Some People" clip?

And for my money, she's still the best Rose I've ever seen. I have to say, though, I really enjoy the clips of Bernadette whenever I see them. I know people have mixed feelings about her performance, but the clips always seem to work on her behalf, unlike LuPone's clips.
Funny how we date these divas by their weight gains and losses.
Does anyone have the clip of Tyne and Jonathan Hadary doing "You'll Never Get Away From Me?" I can look for it, but it's part of a long file of 1995 Broadway video clips.
I think Bernadette did o.k. for the most part. She might have been a little miscast, but she made it her own, so I appreciate that.
I quite like this clip of Bernadette's "Rose's Turn": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI2q_VqDfRU
It's from a concert, but still, I think she captures the middle half of the song better than anyone. Her "Mama"s are actually pretty heartbreaking.
PalJoey, I know I've seen that clip you're referring to around somewhere!
Yes, I love her acting during Rose's Turn. This is my favourite part:

"Welll..*eyes look around desperately* someone tell me" etc.
Also speaking of concerts, I recently listened to her GYPSY 'audition' on her Sondheim etc. album and her voice sounds so, so great. A lot better than the cast recording and bootleg of her actual performance. I guess it was 1996..
Yes, I love Bernadette's version of "Some People" on the Sondheim, Etc. album!
How has no one mentioned Bea Arthur's "Some People?" Granted, she never played the role, but she wanted to and she sings "Some People" on her Just Between Friends CD and I remember really liking it. It would have been awesome if she'd gotten to do it in a concert version or something.
I adore Bea's version! It really is a terrific rendition. I wish someone would have let her play the role. I think she'd have really been something else. I saw her do "Small World", too and it was really rather sweet and charming. I think she'd have be more than up for the demands of the role.
I've had the privilege of seeing Liza perform "Some People" a couple of times in concert. Every other performance I've seen of this song has been something of a letdown. How is it possible that she never played this role?

Maybe it's because at the speed she sings it, GYPSY would only be a one-act and they couldn't charge full price.
That Liza should never play Rose is one of the very few things Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim ever agreed on.
Maybe because of this:

NOTE: Her face is cut off until 0:49
I sort of like her "Rose's Turn." Her "Get off of my runway" is pretty intense. I'd know I'd get out of her way. She certainly sings the hell out of it, especially the climax. She does at least seem to get what the song is all about. That's more than I can say for the kid from Glee and most regional/school/and some professional productions I've seen.
I still don't think Liza could ever play the role in a full production unless she lost all her glitter and didn't make such a production out of every line. She just has such a personality all her own that...ehhh..I just don't know. Back in the day, maybe, but now...not so much.
Oops. Wrong thread.
I've also heard Bea Arthur's "Some People," and I quite like her version; it's different. I bet she would've brought a witty edge to the role. Would definitely have been very fun to see.
I've posted this before, and it's STILL my favorite version of the song.
Some People
I didn't know Buckley played the role in a major production. Was there talk of her doing the revival that ultimately went to Tyne--or is that just conjecture on people's part here and Laurents denied her chance?
Was this just before or after Carrie--I can't help thinking thast she's taking a more Margaret White take on Mama Rose...
I've posted this before, and it's STILL my favorite version of the song.
LOL! Bernadette who? That girl's a star!
Buckley talks about Laurents and Sondheim not liking her performance in this interview.

Glad you all are enjoying my clip - it was a lot of work to find all those and make them fit together!
Please comment on youtube if you can...

So for the 15th time... What did Sondheim say about Bette's Gypsy?
Bravo to MarkNYC! It was worth all the work you put into it!
