The Wiz back on Broadway? — Page 2

I'd see it. It seems rather interesting and I think they're going to have to rely on spectacle to get the attention of everyone else that's fixated on Wicked. And no need for a "total unknown" - I think that could backfire. Just go with someone who is right for the part, name or not.

No, the Addaperle was white.
I forget who said it, but, yea, I don't think two "Oz" musicals can survive on Broadway at once...especially with "Wicked" still going strong. A National Tour, probably, a Broadway run, doubtful.

The Wiz should move in once The Color Purple closes. but if it keeps touring, i seriously doubt it'll transfer. too long on tour tends to kill a show.
but that's only my opinion.
i'd definitely be excited for it. i LOVE the OBCR.

It isn't going to tour of The Wiz, at least not of this production.

Neddy-
I know this production isn't, I was just saying the show would probably stand a better chance as a national tour.

I saw the La Jolla production and every time I saw it the audience was on thier feet! They majority of the audience LOVED it... so I dont know what all you people are saying that people didnt like it!
I hope the show does make it to Broadway after San Fran. I think they are going to have a hard time finding someonne to replace Tituss cause he was AMAZING!

A lot of people I have spoken to enjoyed it at the time, but after getting home decided "wow, it wasn't that great." Which starts word of mouth to not see it. I enjoyed the "La Cage" revival while watching it, but after being home and away from it, I started thinking...ya know, that wasn't so great.

Wasn't the original production of THE WIZ bad enough to last us a lifetime?

C'mon, Dolly -- the original was mindless, gratuitous fun. It didnt pretend to be anything other than a good time, and it solidly delivered at that level.

I actually really liked the La Jolla revival. The only think i think was a mistake was updating it to today. To me at least, its a period piece. As for theatre choices, what about the Broadhurst after Les Miz ends its engagement, unless it keeps on extending......

I liked the La Jolla revival too. I liked it being set today because I feel like it was more relatable, but I didn't like the abundance of modern references and slang. I think you can say it's happening today and still use most of the original script. There's not an enormous amount of the original text that really dates the material. Just a few things here and there. I did like the additional dialogue that expanded on some moments and explained things a little clearer. That was welcomed.

When do you think the cast will be announced?

The actor who played the Tin Man in La Jolla is playing in the 2nd National Tour of Jersey Boys in SF...before it goes to Chicago.

I agree with DollyPop. I saw the OBC and hated it. It was sooooo loud. The soundman told me that the actress playing Dorothy didn't have a big voice and needed the extra amplification. So everyone was super-amplified. What an experience!

The Circle in the Square rumors came about during the time they were desperate for a theater. The game plan could have changed now.
I know The St James was on their wish list at one time. With that house opening up early next year, could "The Wiz" be a potential tennant there?

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Word is that the revised version is being re-thought. The LaJolla staging can't tour and they are not going to rip up the SF theater for a limuted run.
All the actors will be recast, including David Alan Grier. Makes it easier when most have moved onto other shows (including the show's one saving grace, Titus Burgess as the lion, who is in "Mermaid.")

Will Titus still be in Mermaid in mid 2008? There have been no dates for The Wiz even announced as far as I know. What if it's in 2008 as it most likely will be?

It's always funny to see how many people loved or hated the OBC of The Wiz.. Most african american people would probably say they loved it.. because it was written for us and in terms that made it sensible to believe in the whole land of oz.. But, appleas, and oranges.
