"it closed becuz people like you just go to see shows like Wicked or The Lion King. Not because the show was bad"
Seriously...noone is calling you out, M, for defending this crappy musical..no need to get nasty with someone who disagrees.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 4:54pmIt is true though. People in America just go to see what they are familiar with. Baayork Lee said on some interview about her work in Bombay Dreams: "You are living in America and you see they are showing The Beauty and The Beast and Bombay Dreams, and people will go to see The Beauty and The Beast". It's that simple.

I saw no passion in WIW. It was a dull mess, and not the least bit atmospheric thanks to the nauseating set design.
The score was bland.
If it werent for an able cast the night would've been ruined for me and everyone I was with.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 4:57pmActually WIW only ran 18 months in London and closed at a loss.

Muscle, you seem to be under the impression that people dismissed THE WOMAN IN WHITE because it was a complex, deeply layered, serious drama. No. People dismissed THE WOMAN IN WHITE because it reveived nearly across the board negative reviews, and everyone I know (besides a few on this board) that saw the show absolutely hated it. It was just terrible. It's not that people prefer WICKED...it's that TWIW just blew.
And coming from someone who thought SWEENEY TODD was terrible, really, what weight does your view on this matter have anyway?
And what did Baayork Lee do on BOMBAY DREAMS?
#31re: The Woman in White should win the Tony for Best Musical!!!
Posted: 4/25/06 at 5:04pmLee directed the tour of Bombay Dreams. I assumed that WIW recouped in London after 18 months? I guess not.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 5:06pmand before anyone says anything, Bombay Dreams did recoup in London. I have an article that proves it.

I got it, Muscle...trust me. What chutzpah! Just for the record...I am NOT one of those people who just see WICKED or THE LION KING. I often enjoy shows that don't appeal to the masses...and sometimes dislike those that do.
Moreover, I "get" just about everything I read, see or hear...the result of my above-average intellect and life experience. Perhaps if Michael Ball didn't require more compensation per week than Julia Roberts...

Aww, Muscle.
I hear and corroborate all of your points.
I respect everyone else's opinions, but I still hold firm on my love and respect for WIW. It is going to become a fan following solely based on those who it has touched in the way it has touched me. I admit its hard, and it could be reworked, but I love it as is, for me, and I think that the show caters to those who view it in the way someone like me does. Not a mass marketed show.
Well I can't wait to see Maria next month at any rate!

Posted: 4/25/06 at 5:24pmI never saw WOMAN IN WHITE, but I love the cast recording. What I don't get, is that for the last year people have been complaining about "pop" musicals and jukebox musicals have been dominating Broadway . . . but when a musical which is not either of the two mentioned, people still hate it. Again, I never saw it, so my opinion might be different if I did. But, everyone has their own opinion.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 5:29pmActually, I was listening to Seth Rudetsky on Broadway Radio on Sirius, and he was talking about how he really hopes Jersey Boys doesn't win best score, not only because its a jukebox musical, but because its not original music. The songs were already composed. I agree with him!

Posted: 4/25/06 at 5:31pmWhen I last posted earlier, the thread was a little more calm. I loved Woman In White but I know that it was either love it or hate it. I loved the performances and the sets and the music. I have seen quite a lot of theatre over the past few years and I can say I still think it deserved better than it got. But again that is my opinion. I knew lots of people, not just the few on this board who loved/or liked the show. But like I said love it or hate. I think it was a decidedly British vehicle. As was the book to some degree. But I also think swipes at the performers is a bit harsh. I have always felt that as a production goes, WIW had the best ensemble/voices around. Plus, and I know this is naive, but a show that lasts 18 months anywhere now is not a failure. But I also know everything is judged by the monetary system. Again just my opinion about a show I truly loved.

I really love the show but as said before it was a love/hate show! The music is beautiful IMO and I loved the story! I ended up seeing it four times in it's run! I have heard some people who loved it and than some others who hated it. No matter what we should be respecting others opinions!

I can't believe Munk would rather have WIW winning anything over any other show...hehe...i don't like Disney musicals too much. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang(althought not a Disney show as far as i know) was a cute musical though, but usually shows like Chitty or Wicked feel too "Disney" to me as well. I feel like they were made for children. Just my thought, NOT saying they ARE made for children, ok? anyways...i must confess i am somehow wishing Tarzan is a big big hit...i have no desire to see it, BUT it took Movin' Out OUT of Broadway and it deserves to last for 20 years, because of it. It was in my opinion the worst show that Broadway has ever seen, plus a lie to anyone who expected a musical and encountered a ballet(and ballets are great!) but not if there is Billy Joel's music being played along with it. Billy is amazing though. But the mixture of Joel's songs and ballet, did not work for me.
If I had ANY respect for you left...that post just destroyed the remainder.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 6:18pmI thought the score and story were wonderful. I didn't get a chance to see it, but I believe that part of it did have to do with the fact that Maria Friedman and Michael Ball were out so much. I could care less who I see when I see a show. I don't know why some people think that if you don't see the star, it ain't worth the price. Unless you are a fan. I've seen several understudies in "professional shows" and was not disappointed once.

My negativity? Hah. That's a laugh.
I'm not the one who blasted a beatiful and moving piece of theatre that is loved by thousands of people. (Need I mention TONY award winning?) Which has spawned both national and international tours. WIW couldn't beg for that success.
And, if you haven't noticed, I'm not the only one who has remarked about how ridiculous and dubious your tastes are.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 7:16pmYou know...i don't really care what you have to say, if you don't like what i talk about, don't read or post in my threads and save the drama. I joined this site to talk about my love for theatre, not to talk to people like you. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything then. If you think those negatives things about me, ignore me.
