I am standing up for Muscle here!

It is really screwed up that you are trying to deprive someone of their own opinions. Let us think what we want. We love WIW and nothing will take that away from us. I am only being defensive because you are taking strikes at innocent people who have done nothing to harm you,

Online drama is stupid enough as it is, there is not a need to make it worse. Please respect our opinions, and we will respect yours. Simple as that.

amen, plus having a different point of view, means being unique, and not follow the crowds, and that always should be celebrated.

Amen, All_For_Laura. Seriously, I hate it when people bash ALw, because I love most of his shows. Not saying I love all of them, as I hate CATS as much as the next person, but still. I's what makes us all humans unique. You can't expect EVERYONE to enjoy Sondheim musicals, although I have found inspiration in them as well. That doesn't give ANY of you the right to bash anyone for their opinions just because the opinions are different. That is DEFINATELY screwed up. Jut learn that peole have different opinions, and MOVE ON! Stop worrying where you're going, move on!

As for others who loved WiW (I loved it too) here are some words of wisdom from the master himself (Sondheim): Stop worrying if you're vision is new. Let others make that decision. They usually do.

In short, just go with your opinion and don't let ANYONE bash it. And as for the others, don't excuse opinions beause they're different. It's just wrong.

And please. Muscle didn't do anything negative to you. Leave him alone.

Whoo, that took a lot out of me.

been dealing with some personal family tragedy so I missed all of this.

First off - I hope WIW is nominated for Best Musical. If we all went on our "preferences" we'd all be ticked off. Urinetown was the worst evening in the theatre I ever experienced, but people I respect and are good friends with Loved it - so, live and let live...

Second - I doubt WIW will win it, but I do hope that the nominators want to encourage composers to compose scores for theatre rather than award something to people who 20-30 years after their 15 minutes in the sun is over with a good director and a good cast they pull together some karoke thing and call it Theatre.

Third - Leave Muscle alone...

You all have to realize that the days of a big show, like "Camelot" not getting nominated for best musical or best book and score are long since past. (It was only nominated for best actor, actress, conductor and sets. It won for actor and sets.)

In the past few decades, such deathless shows as "Starmites" "Leader of the Pack" and "Merlin" have been nominated for best musical, book and score.

So, you're all going to basically suck it up and accept the fact that shows that you think are crap are going to get nominations and possibly win some of them.

It might win the Tony for the interesting sets (Film projections)
But, I doubt it will win anything else.
But you never know.
Loved the sets.

I really want The Color Purple to win. The musical has amazing music, choreography, cast, story, and people backing it up. I think it is fron runner for this years Tony.

no...thank you for rebumping my threads all the time Findyourgrail...you know...you are just a coward who doesn't even show your face, post a pic of your face if you wanna say something to me, how brave do you think you are for trashing me behind your comfortable desk. And have you seen Bombay Dreams? You never answer that question...how funny. That show that is so bad was a hit that recouped its investment in London.

haha...you are making my day...you said before "Don't bother with him Foa. It's like talking to a five year old". But you keep talking to me still. What a loser, hiding his/her pathetic self behind a pic of the talented Sara Ramirez. I feel bad for her, someone without any manners using her picture like that.
Thanks Cherjim, All for Laura and Piazzaslight. What i wrote is just a thread about my thoughts. I expressed my wish to see WIW winning a Tony. It probably won't happen. But it is just a thought i wanted to share. And i didn't want to get insulted because i liked either WIW or Bombay Dreams. Most people on this board are somehow outcasts, musicals are not something so mainstream like pop or rock music, musical fans are a minority. So to be bashed by this little community, is just simply pathetic. Maybe Carl Magnum, Foa or FYG feel like i posted what i did to be made fun of. So hopefully they were happy at least for the minute they wrote words to put me down.
Most likely these people were made fun of in school for being gay, or for being into theatre. I was gay bashed in high school and my own gay friends make fun of me because i listen to showtunes. But the difference is that i don't need to make fun of others to feel good about myself. I already feel great about myself and about my fantastic taste for theatre and my individuality.

I don't think Woman In White was bad, i just don't think it was a mutlifaceted crowd pleaser.

Personally the only things i want to see WiW walk away with is Maria and Michael because THEY deserve it. Not The projections but the hard working cast.

Of course Maria and Michael deserve tony's!!! re: The Woman in White should win the Tony for Best Musical!!!

On a side note, We all have just made comments about being able to express our own opinions, and then a comment is made about Muscle liking bombay dreams, so we shouldn't respect him. That is childish and insecure. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. Thanks.

Hmmm...there seems to be a little revisionist thinking about THE WOMAN IN WHITE making it to the TONYs. After it closed abruptly, people just wrote if off. Reading some of the posts here and on ATC recently, there seems to be some hopeful predictions that it might get a surprise nomination for TONY Best Musical. Well, it did make the list of nominated Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals from the Outer Critics Circle for a start.

Why not?

Nominations for Best Musical, Musical Score, Maria and Michael, and a number of technical awards ( Sets, Lighting, and Costume).

Fingers crossed re: The Woman in White should win the Tony for Best Musical!!!

Muscle..
I think the thread took a nasty turn when you made the ridiculous assumption that WIW was too complex for American audiences and that's why it didn't do well here. You just insulted everyone who doesn't agree with you claiming if they didn't like WIW they just didn't "get it".
What makes that so funny is that WIW didn't even turn a profit in London. And there is nothing complex about WIW, not the story, not the book, not the score, and certainly not the lyrics. The only thing I had to concentrate on while watching WIW was not throwing up due to motion sickness from the projections.
Also your logic that shows are good because they make money in London is also a little off. There have been many shows that have made money on both sides of the Atlantic but that has nothing to do with their artistic merit. Look at Cats...one of the longest running shows in broadway history. Does that make it fantastic theater?

this is all i said: "It is true though. People in America just go to see what they are familiar with. Baayork Lee said on some interview about her work in Bombay Dreams: "You are living in America and you see they are showing The Beauty and The Beast and Bombay Dreams, and people will go to see The Beauty and The Beast". It's that simple".

"i must confess i am somehow wishing Tarzan is a big big hit...i have no desire to see it, BUT it took Movin' Out OUT of Broadway and it deserves to last for 20 years, because of it."

That's pretty harsh. So it's ok to slam Movin' Out, but not Woman in White? Kind of a double-standard, isn't it? And I don't really understand the rationale behind cheering on a show no matter how bad it is, and wishing for a 20-year run, simply because it booted out another show that was quite well-respected and popular, but you personally didn't like it. I hate Phantom of the Opera, but I'm glad others love it and it has kept actors employed for YEARS.

"You liked Bombay Dreams! So why should we take anything you say or think seriously?"

I loved Bombay Dreams. I wish I could see it again. That was such a fun show.

"Look at Cats...one of the longest running shows in broadway history. Does that make it fantastic theater?"

Actually, it was highly innovative when it opened. The concept, costumes, makeup, set design, and hit score made it an international phenomenon, all of which are artistic elements. I know it's fun to pooh-pooh twenty-some-odd years later, but it was quite spectacular in its day. So yes, I would say it was fantastic theatre. I think any show that can attract millions in various languages and a song whose melody is recognized almost anywhere in the world would count as "fantastic theatre". Will it be included in the college textbook for intellectual snobs? No, because they are too busy chattering about Sondheim to recognize that "theatre" is not just about the parts, but also the sum.

Matt, you are absolutely right. I never wished any Broadway show to close. I do think that "Movin' Out" was a ballet and didn't belong on Broadway. But that is just my point of view and i don't expect people to agree with me.

I will add that most Americans are not familiar with Indian culture and Bollywood. It has a popularity in Britain that it doesn't have here. Personally, I love Bollywood, I love India, I probably would have enjoyed Bombay Dreams. I'm just saying... it's just not something that's familiar to Americans, so most people probably didn't get it. Does that mean that a lot of Americans are close minded and don't have much scope? Yeah, I do believe that.

Agreed.

Muscle's love for BOMBAY DREAMS is irrelevant. While he might get carried away with thinking it's a major theatrical work of great importance (which it's not), it just doesn't make sense for others to say "OH, well you like this flop show, so your opinion is void."

I loved TABOO. Saw it 14 times. Does that make my opinion in-valid?

I also really liked BOMBAY DREAMS. I thought there were some glorious moments score-wise. The sets were wonderful, choregraphy inspiring, and some of the book very funny. The show was doomed on Broadway before it even opened - and with overly harsh critics, that didn't help it's chances either.

Had BOMBAY DREAMS opened this season, the reviews would be, by default, much more positive. That show deserved a healthier run. I didn't think it was great theatre, but I sure loved that show.
