Has any show ever won a Tony for best musical after it closed?

WOMAN IN WHITE certainly shouldn't.
No, it absolutely should not.

I don't think so. And don't count on it happening this year.
Not too sure, but I think Angela Lansbury won best actress in a musical for Dear World after it closed.
WIW has ZERO...I repeat, a ZERO percent chance of winning the Best Musical Tony this year. It probably won't even be nominated.
Your best bet for a WIW win is Best Score.
Didn't Haleluiah(sp) Baby! win Best Musical after it had closed in 68? The year that Hair lost?
Hallelujah Baby is the only musical to have won the Tony for Best Musical (along with four others) after it had closed.
Hallelujah Baby was 1968. Hair lost to 1776 in 1969.
Tnks Matt. I said it "should" i don't think it has too many chances. But we shall wait and see.
Oh please God, don't let it happen. I'd rather see Tarzan win.
Hell no, I'd rather see THE WOMAN IN WHITE sweep the Tony's than to have TARZAN even be nominated for anything.

agreed Munk. (there's something inside me that wants Disney to fail. I know its so wrong, but I just would love it.)
I don't want Disney to fail, I just want people to finally stop being so jaded by the Disney monster and recognize the fact that they are capable of mounting pure crap. And that's all that TARZAN is - there isn't one positive thing about TARZAN.
I wish to God that Disney would start producing good musicals, and I'm hoping that will come with MARY POPPINS, but I have a feeling that they will butcher it by the time it opens in New York.
Yep Munk, I totally agree. My hopes of Stiles and Drewe becoming the new Rodgers and Hammerstein are ruined. The show'll get panned, especially with the giant umbrella gimic I've heard about. Why does Disney have to ruin good things? They're revamping their Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disneyland to include Johnny Depp figures for christsakes. They ruin everything.
As much as I love WIW, I am very sure it won't win Best Musical. As previously mentioned Best Score is the best bet!
Hell, they've even done away with hand-drawn animation, which is the absolute foundation of not only the Walt Disney corporation, but of Walt Disney himself.
The very thing that made Disney a giant force in the entertainment world has now been thrown to the dogs - it's really a shame.
^I agree.
One of my favs, but I fear that it has a slim chance of winning.
Of course I would love to see it win best musical, muscle, but we must face reality.
William Dudley for Scenic Design?

I too wish it would win, but I know it won't. I think my religious faith would become much deeper if it did win because only a miracle could allow that.
I could see secnic design being nominated or even winning because of its originality. It was prasied in one aspect for allowing a different kind of movement of the actors on stage.
Hahaha. It closed for a reason.
it closed becuz people like you just go to see shows like Wicked or The Lion King. Not because the show was bad.

I would love it if it would win, but I know it won't. I still think the score has the best chance of anything. That along with scenic design, and maybe costuming. Not including the fat-suit. I also hope Maria and Michael nominated at least.
As far as major nominations go, expect a nod for Friedman and the score. And it's best bet, I think, is for Friedman, not the score.
I can't believe Munk would rather have WIW winning anything over any other show...hehe...i don't like Disney musicals too much. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang(althought not a Disney show as far as i know) was a cute musical though, but usually shows like Chitty or Wicked feel too "Disney" to me as well. I feel like they were made for children. Just my thought, NOT saying they ARE made for children, ok? anyways...i must confess i am somehow wishing Tarzan is a big big hit...i have no desire to see it, BUT it took Movin' Out OUT of Broadway and it deserves to last for 20 years, because of it. It was in my opinion the worst show that Broadway has ever seen, plus a lie to anyone who expected a musical and encountered a ballet(and ballets are great!) but not if there is Billy Joel's music being played along with it. Billy is amazing though. But the mixture of Joel's songs and ballet, did not work for me.

Um Muscle...WIW, as a whole, was just plain bad...that's not to say that there weren't any redeeming qualities about it. Word tends to spread, and not just among the theatre community. If a show is worth seeing...the seats somehow get filled.
