I have a question but it is a bit odd. How life like are ursula's tentacles throughout the show? It sounds weird but I have this phobia of anything with tentacles and suction cups such as an octopus, so i bought tickets for the Mezz hoping if they are too good I wont be too afraid haha.
StephanietheStar... thanks for the review! one question for you. what did you think of Mary Poppins?? :)
coasterking500, I understand your phobia. While I'm okay wit tentacles in general, I don't like fish tails. It is strange that I'm a fan of Little Mermaid musical and film, but I just kind of don't look at the tails to carefully. Anyway, they are not very realistic. The material was almost accordion like. They didn't move much on their own, they just were stiff and moved with Ursula. I did not notice suction cups. There are a few times where she moves them up, and once she comes out on her bubble throne and they are up around it. That may bother you, but otherwise I *think* you'll be fine (unless they change the costume! :)
Yeah, agreed ^^^^ The tentacles aren't super life like so it shouldn't be a problem, though I'm not sure of the extent of your phobia (and I don't think it's weird, if it makes you feel better I hate the sound of people rubbing their hands on carpet or couches...LOL!!).

I saw Mary Poppins in London actually (with Gavin Lee). I thought it was really good, and glad they did some darkening of it but felt they should have kept MORE of the songs from the movie (I mean, no Jolly Holiday? no Love to Laugh!!?) but it was something I wouldn't shell out the cash to see again. Which is also how I feel about Lion King. Both were fun nights of theatre, with some "WOW!" moments but it wasn't something I'd go to again probably. Sadly, I've never seen Beauty and the Beast professionally (I keep missing it wherever I go or something comes up!! lol) but from what I know of it I'd say Mermaid is a bit more like that show.
I think the added songs are very successful and compliment the original score (which, lets face it, has always been one of the best Disney scores) very nicely.
and thanks for reading my review everyone! I'm glad there is excitement about the show.
Stephanie, I missed you by a day! I saw the show on the 18th both matinée and evening and stage doored both times since they didn't come all out at the matinée and I wanted to see a specific cast member. I didn't see him anyway.
I actually liked her pink dress. It was really cute. I think the "Kiss the Girl" dress was awesome.
And I have to agree about Sherie Renee. I knew she looked tired, got her autograph and I don't know why I asked but asked for a photo but she said "No, two show day..." and I was totally fine without one, but she seemed uber tired. Anyway, her performance was great and I loved the comical evil lines they give her.
Yeah and I still think they should change Flotsam and Jetsam's outfits..and I think Ursula's "2nd" outfit should be used during the whole show.
Also, did you see both kids? I thought they were both great.
Ah, Stephanie, forgot to ask. Did the guy that looked important: was he a tall guy with kind of wavy brown or grey hair? The day I saw it I saw one swing (my mom saw another too) and some other guy taking notes.
I also met Thomas Schumacher. That made my day! He was very nice and even told the hang out after the show so they usually leave through another exit to get there.
TLKfan, sorry I missed you :) I was still in town then, I stayed at the Curtis so I was practically outside the theatre all the time :)
the guy had grey-ish hai I believe. I just know he looked similar to Menken to me. but it was a dark theatre and I probably was dreaming it'd be him so I could gush to him :)
I did see both kids, both were fantastic. A bit different, but both very good. No one should worry about which one they get to see.

Stephanie, how did you like the Curtis? That's where I stayed when I was there a few weeks ago - I thought it was fun, and a good deal for the price.
What did you think of the blacklighting used in the show? And what did you think of Ariel's grotto?
P.S.: The Mary Poppins stage show does have "Jolly Holiday" in it (with some new material incorporated, but still!).
Stephanie, "Jolly Holiday" is in the stage version of "Mary Poppins." However, "Love to Laugh" isn't in it.
...So when you have two shows in one day, you cant stand still for 3 to 5 seconds and let a light flash in your face?
I'm just bitter as all hell because for some reason I had a delusion that Sherie would be incredibly gracious (a la Norm Lewis!) at the stage door!
I'm so depressed!
Well, they've been busy I suppose. My mom told me that Norm wasn't nice when she saw him in Les Mis and was shocked at how nice he was when he came out for Little Mermaid. I think it depends on how they are feeling and what kind of role they are doing.
Sierra was very nice when she came out though. She came out after the evening show and was really nice. And Mr. prince...yeah, who knows if he's nice or not, I don't think he's into the stage door thing.
Weren't there only about 3 or 4 songs in the movie? I watched it over the weekend and expected more songs.
Norm wasn't nice at Les Miz? That's surprising. When I saw it back in November, it was almost like talking to an old friend! He was one of the most gracious people I have ever met at a stage door since I started seeing Broadway shows! But even performers have their off days, as we all do!
Uncageg, yes, the movie has a surprisingly low amount of actual musical numbers. There's the "Fathoms Below" number at the beginning on the ship, "Daughters of Triton" when Ariel doesn't show up, "Part of Your World" when she's in her grotto, "Under the Sea" when Sebastian attempts to convince her that the world above isn't worth her trouble, "Part of Your World (reprise)" after she saves Eric from the burning wreckage of his ship, "Poor Unfortunate Souls" when Ursula tranforms Ariel, "Kiss The Girl" when the animals attempt to get Eric to kiss the now mute Ariel, and then the "Finale" is the next and (obviously) final musical number.
So, in short, yes. It has few actual songs, but they're all gems! (ESPECIALLY Poor Unfortunate Souls - my favorite Disney Villain tune by FAR!)
Edit: Ahh yes! And "Les Poissons", of course! When the chef attempts to cook Sebastian!

There are seven songs in the movie (not counting reprises): Fathoms Below, Daughters of Triton, Part of Your World, Under the Sea, Poor Unfortunate Souls, Les Poissons, and Kiss the Girl. Under the Sea won the Oscar, and Kiss the Girl was also nominated. The movie also won the Oscar for best score.
Thanks. Guess I wasn't paying real attention to the music with the excetion of "Under the Sea" (Which I know won thr Oscar) and "Part of Your World". And I do remember hearing "Kiss the Girl"

How long did you have to wait at the stage door for all of them to come out? I really want to meet Sherie, Sierra, and Jonathan Freeman, but my wife doesn't want to wait there all night...
I had a very similar stage door experience. Everyone I caught was a delight (especially Sierra), and Sherie did stay to sign autographs and pose for pix, but I think she was eager to get home. Not that I blame her, and she was still very poilte. I think maybe the cast wasn't expecting people to be there, because a lot of them seemed surprised to see us. Pleased, but surprised.

Sherie wasn't very nice when I met her on opening night. She seemed like she didn't want to sign autographs or talk to fans. But I didn't care, I was getting my picture and autograph.

To sum down, who was nicest and not pleasent, here's a list.
Super Awesome:
Sierra Boggess
Norm Lewis
Tyler Maynard
Derrick Baskin
J.J. Singleton
Not Friendly:
Sherie Rene Scott
Cody Hanford
Johnathon Freeman
Not Nice nor Rude, in the Middle:
Sean Palmer
well I guess Jolly Holliday IS in the show, but not the part I wanted to be (with all the names!! mainlybecause Bert sings "Stephanie is Smashing" lol). My bad!
As far as lighting/grotto, I loved it. I think all the set pieces were successful, except those things I talked about earlier. The other stuff does the job without being ridiculously like "HEY we are in a grotto! Get it?!"
Johnathan Freeman walked out and straight for the street--I could have yelled for him, but something tells me he would have hated me for it...so I just watched him leave.
and Little Merboy- I instantly realized Sherie wasn't super accomadating, but I have met her once before and THIS time I was getting a picture no matter what! lol. It seriously takes like, 2 seconds...
Thinton-so in short, all three of those actors come out really quickly. Sierra will be very nice and sign everything you got, Sherie will act like you just asked her to drive you to the airport and if you aren't quick enough Johnathan will run into the street to get away. :)
I was able to get Jonathan Freeman because I caught him right away and he was nice I guess. Sean Palmer didn't come out each time, you might want to hit some other doors like the lobby? Sierra and Sherie only came out after the evening show and Sierra was very nice and excited to hear what people were saying. I also noticed not all of the ensemble come of the the stage door. A lot of the main characters came out and Norm Lewis came out both times and yes, was extremely nice and would even kneel down to talk to the little kids.
I love Norm Lewis, he litterally talked to me for like, 10 minutes. he was awesome.
I got a couple of the ensemble girls, the ones I recognized. The males were a little less distinguishable but they came out the stage door the night I went (I only went Thursday night, not Friday).
one of the security gaurds said that Sean Palmer and some of the cast have a habit of hanging out at The Corner Office bar/restaurant, which is next to the Curtis.
I forgot to add that if anyone wants to go to Denver for Mermaid or anything at the performing arts complex the Curtis was a great hotel. Staff was sooo nice, and you could literally crawl to the theatre from the hotel door.
I stayed at the new Hilton Garden Inn right down the streets.
Yeah Thomas Schumacher told me to look for them at The Office or whatever the bar place is called. I had noticed it between shows. I should have gone, but that would have been way too stalker-ish and awkward, but I was thinking of going there before I knew the cast might be there. It's a cute place.
Yeah, I ate dinner there before I heard that the cast goes there...and I didn't go back because--yes that would make me a stalker :)
great drinks p.s.--expensive but yummy!
Yeah it looked nice, and I was tempted to get a drink there. Oh well. On a side note, I went to Cheesecake Factor after Movin' Out in S.F. and I saw some of the cast there. It was kind of awkward even if they didn't know me, but I knew who they were.
