The more interesting Tony races...

So there's a lot of talk about the musical Tony Awards which seem to be fairly easy to predict due to a lack of good competition (just the fact that Grant and Bierko are being predicted by most to be nominees is sad...)

So any way, the more interesting races seem to be among the Plays...particularly Revivals. I feel that All My Sons, Speed-the-Plow, The Seagull, Exit the King, Norman Conquests, Mary Stuart and Joe Turner all have really good chances. Equus, Blithe Spirit, Man for All Seasons, Waiting for Godot and Desire Under the Elms could also be included I think. How do you pick just four? What are your thoughts?

And what about the performers? When it comes to Lead Actors, will Lithgow, Radcliffe, Griffiths, Langella and Esparza be remembered now that Rush, Dennehy, Irwin, Gandolfini and Sadowski have arrived on the scene?

The women seem a little easier to predict nominees. Scott Thomas, Gugino, Walters, McTeer, and Feldshuh seem the likely bets to me. But what about Fonda, Atkinson, Gay Harden and Wiest?

What are your thoughts and predictions for nominees? Who did I leave out? Does anyone have any thoughts for Featured?

re: The more interesting Tony races...

I don't envy the nominators when it comes to the plays this year, that's for sure. Particularly lead actor and revival.

Has Wiest been deemed Lead?

If so, I think she, Fonda and Gay Harden are safe.
But it's gonna be interesting.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

I agree that all the play acting categories are really tough. I worry that the great performances of the fall are forgotten for the more current ones, hopefully not. I think it's really nice that this season and last the play categories have been so incredibly fantastic and interesting.
I do vote for Geoffrey Rush as Lead actor re: The more interesting Tony races...

From my understanding, all 4 All My Sons "stars" were billed above the title, but Wilson and Holmes were petitioned and deemed to be moved down to the Featured category.
So you think Weist, Fonda and Harden are sure bets? Maybe the Actress category isn't as easy as I thought...the plot thickens...
(btw, I loved Weist in All My Sons, but don't necessarily remember the critics gushing over her...Lithgow was also PHENOMINAL in my opinion)

I don't think Wiest is a safe bet. Harden and the ladies from MARY STUART are, IMO. I also hope Jayne Atkinson gets her well-deserved nod.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

I don't envy the nominators this year at all, either.

I haven't even tried to make a list of potential nominees this year (though I know who I'd like to see win).

This year, at least when it comes to plays, "it's an honor just to be nominated" is the understatement of the century.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

Oooh...I just remembered one I left off. Ruehl in American Plan...and Rabe...are they both to be considered in the Lead category? There was no ruling concerning them. Are they both billed above the title in the playbill?

re: The more interesting Tony races...

So there is no "Leading Role" in American Plan? Is the same true for Dividing the Estate and Norman Conquests (probably)? What about reasons to be pretty and God of Carnage? I know they haven't had an official ruling yet (oh wait...did GoC?) but is there the possibility that all four people in those two casts could be Featured as well?

re: The more interesting Tony races...

It's going to be hard to predict the final four nominees for revival of a play. The revivals have been especially good this year, and so to narrow down the category, it tends to be about great plays in great productions. I think The Seagull, Exit the King, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Mary Stuart, The Norman Conquests and Waiting for Godot are the top contenders of the 15(!) eligible play revivals. Just in my own handicapping, I'm guessing the four nominees may be The Seagull, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Mary Stuart and The Norman Conquests, but I think Godot or Exit could knock out one of those. Seagull is vulnerable for not being around anymore, so alas, I think it could be the one that gets dropped.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

I've already asked this on the longer Tony predictions thread, but that one seems more-musical dominated, so I'll put it out here as well--
Who do you guys think are in contention for featured actors in a play this year?
It's a category that people making predictions across various boards seem to be neglecting a lot (especially in comparison to leading/featured actress discussions, I mean)
thanks!

re: The more interesting Tony races...

Wouldn't surprise me if all 3 NORMAN CONQUESTS men were nominated, along with Roger Robinson and Chad L. Coleman from JOE TURNER.

Way to read the original post.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

My goodness, 15 play revivals this season! What a wealth of plays. I don't think any of you have considered Accent on Youth and The Philanthropist.

The new plays are 33 Variatons, God of Carnage, Reasons to be Pretty, Irena's Vow, Impressionism, what else?

re: The more interesting Tony races...

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Tony rules were changed to allow the nominators to choose as many shows or performances in the category as they deemed worthy? Deprived of their chance to be bitchy and shut out shows for mysterious reasons, I bet two thirds of the nominators would quit.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

What category does does Daniel Radcliffe fall under?
And does anyone think he has a chance to win? I haven't seen many plays this season so I can't compare his to other performances, but I thought he was excellent.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

Peter Firth was considered Leading in the original production of Equus so I'm assuming that's the route the revival will take. Strangely enough the Academy Awards considered Firth Supporting in the film version.

re: The more interesting Tony races...

Both Radcliffe and Griffiths are contending for the leading actor category at the Tonys. Hopefully Radcliffe will get nominated.
