You don't think jumping up and down on chairs and headbanging qualifies as Tony Award-winning choreography? Yeah, that one baffled me too.

I can think of the three least deserved Tony winners:
Bernadette Peters for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN
Lauren Bacall for WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Sarah Travis for orchestrations for SWEENEY TODD

I think Travis's orchestrations for the revival of Sweeney were pretty revolutionary considering she had to slim the arrangements down to 10 actors/players. Come on, seriously!
Why wasn't Bernadette Peters nominated for Into the Woods?
It was embarrassing for ASHLEY BROWN not to be nominated for Poppins for the Tony, when Gavin Lee and Rebecca Luker both were nominated. Ouch! Must have been that severely dodgy accent

Why wasn't Bernadette Peters nominated for Into the Woods?
Because she didn't get nominated.

There's been a lot of speculation about Bernadette not being nominated for Into the Woods, my theory is that she was out of the show by March, and so they didn't want to nominate someone the audiences wouldn't see.
I always thought that Bernadette Peters didn't want her name submitted since she did the part as a favor.
If she had been nominated, would she have been in the Leading Actress category, because I don't think she would've beaten Joanna Gleason anyway.
Although I suppose they could've bumped Gleason down to Featured, where she also would've won.
"Bill T. Jones for his choreography in Spring Awakening! And WINNING! That just confused me."
^THIS. Yes. I'm a dance fan and went to see Spring Awakening post-Tonys, all excited for a night of great choreo. Loved the show... but a CHOREOGRAPHY Tony? Mind-blowingly wrong.
I'd also throw Beth Leavel into the mix for this year's nomination, simply because that horrible show should never be in the same sentence as "award." And I say that as someone who adores Beth Leavel. Here's hoping she finds a really great role in a really great show!

Regarding the previously unanswered question about what makes someone lead or featured, by default, it does go by if the actor's name is above or below the title, but producers can petition actors for lead or featured if they so choose. It's not entirely dependent on whether the actor's name is above or below the title--the cases of leading actors nominated as featured was just a result of someone not caring enough.
Joanna Gleason won the supporting Drama Desk and Patti LuPone won the lead DD, so when they were put in the same category for the Tonys, people assumed LuPone would win, but no.
Bernadette simply didnt make the cut once Gleason was put in lead...both their names are over the title, but so was Westenberg who was nom'd in the featured category.
Frankly, I think they are all featured roles in Into the Woods, but if I had to name what roles were leads it'd be Baker and his wife.
The sin is that Fernland didnt get a supporting actress nom.
I agree with Tammy Blanchard getting a random tony nom.
Why her and not Rose Hemingway or Danielle Radcliffe?
I never understood Penny Fuller being the sole nominee for The Dinner Party. I thought she was the one weak leak out of an otherwise strong cast.
I do get the nominations for the dance/ballet productions. There is no other category for them anymore other than Musical, so it makes sense when they deliver outstanding performances, which I did witness in Contact and Movin' Out. The same goes for operas, so why not ballets that appear on Broadway?
I never really got John Cullum's nomination for Urinetown or John Lithgow's win for Sweet Smell of Success. I found them both shaky at best (John Cullum had a LOT of trouble remembering lines/lyrics when I saw the show).
Tammy Blanchard's nomination this year is really laughable.
I also really loved Jeff Hiller in BLOODY BLOODY and would've easily nominated him over O'Malley (who I thought was quite good but didn't remember until I checked my Playbill) or the two SCOTTSBORO BOYS boys.
In my opinion, Big River is the worst show to win Best Musical which I have ever seen. (I know it has its fans - I'm not one) However, given the competition that year (1985), it can't be said the nomination was "random or undeserving".
Awww...Big River has a special place in my heart. The book is rather thin, but I think Roger Miller's score is a sparkling gem. It's one of the few scores I have listened to so often, I can actually begin the next song the in the precise key before it starts. And even though I was only in the chorus in a small production, it was one of the best times I ever had performing a show.

What the **** was up with Marcia Lewis getting a frigging Tony nomination in 1994 for playing MISS LYNCH in the revival of "Grease" - Seriously????!!!! They wasted a whole space in that category for that performance! Even putting Beth Fowler from Beauty and the Beast in that slot would have made more friggin sense! Honestly...
Matthew Broderick (Mannered Blahderick) for H2S and Winning.
He gave the same performance he gives over and over. Not to mention his nasal whining makes Daniel Radcliffe sound like Placido Domingo.
This year it's definitely Rory O'Malley. I didn't even remember him by act 2.
I agree with a lot of the ones posted here and will add another...Beth Fowler for The Boy from Oz.
I have to say Patti LuPone for WOMEN ON THE VERGE...Don't get me wrong, I thought she did a wonderful job, but I feel she got the nomination more because she is Patti LuPone.
Also, Beth Leavel for BABY, IT'S YOU. I wish Sherie Rene Scott would've taken her slot instead, because the shaky Spanish accent was more digestible than a Jewish stereotype punctuated by frequent uses of "Oy!".

I saw How to Succeed last weekend, and I knew the show scored a best featured actress nomination, so I assumed it was Rose Hemingway (who I thought was great), or maybe even Smitty, who I really liked. Or at least maybe Ms. Jones. But Tammy Blanchard?? Really! I've liked her in movies but this role is nothing but making weird lips at the audience. Ridiculous.
Also, yeah, Spring Awakening for choreography. what the heck.

Most thing "Producers"...
part of this board seems very prejudiced against anything "dance" related. with that said i agree with the Spring Awakening award for choreography. however, contact and movin' out were such unique ventures on the broadway stage it is hard to judge them if you aren't willing to accept something new.

they didnt need to just fill that catagory because they wasily could have nominated were Aaron Tveit in next to normal!
