So, after seeing the Reprise! staged reading of A New Brain, I popped the recording back into the player - I'm still listening to it a week later. I think it's marvelous, and that "Heart and Music" could be a great group a capella number. Anyhow...
I was thinking of seeing Debbie Reynolds play the mother - anyone else think that would be good if they do it again soon?

Posted: 2/8/05 at 9:48amgood lord miz Rathnait - I never will understand your taste in women!...but I'll get to work on finding her number for you!

Posted: 2/8/05 at 9:51amYou don't understand anyone's taste in women. And what's wrong with Reynolds?? Cute, funny, talented...

What inspired casting! I think she would be PERFECT! Of course, I have a soft spot for "old dykes"!
And speaking of which, I think we need a thread of great Ethel Merman quotes!

Posted: 2/8/05 at 10:08amRath - we most certainly DO all have our issues - myself included!...nothing wrong with dating a woman old enough to be your mother!

Posted: 2/8/05 at 10:12amGood thing - because Debbie would certainly not be the first in that category...

Posted: 2/8/05 at 10:35amDoes anyone know if there is either going to be another reading or anything related to A New Brain it is one of the shows I highly highly regret not seeing.

Posted: 2/8/05 at 1:32pmI WOULD say this was inspired casting if it weren't for the fact that Debbie Reynolds can't act. She's a song and dance girl. You can't have a non-actress be in a William Finn show. It doesn't work. I'd rather see Elaine Stritch.

Debbie Reynolds would certainly seem to have marquee value to certain audience segments and would likely be excellent in the part.
Penny Fuller was magnificent in the original production at Lincoln Center! and is awesome on the cd. I have loved Penny Fuller since she was Eve Harrington in APPLAUSE.

i also saw the reprise staged reading and loved it... william finn is so great!
i loved karen morrow as the mother, not sure about debbie reynolds in the part although i do love her. i actually thought about elaine stritch in the part.
ps - malcolm gets was very weak vocally as the star.

Posted: 2/8/05 at 2:18pmPenny Fuller blew me away at Lincoln Center. What an emotional performance! I could see Reynolds in the role. Off the top of my head, I'm also thinking of Blythe Danner, Ruth Williamson, Dee Hoty or Charles Busch...

Menken Fan, wasn't Penny Fuller awesome in A NEW BRAIN? I am so glad you agree. She just blew me away.
And let's remember she had great singing folks like Kristin Chenoweth, Mary Testa and Calloway in the show too. But for me, Penny Fuller shined that a great, exciting star.

Posted: 2/8/05 at 2:46pmEveryone in A New Brain was terrific, but yes, especially Penny. When she sang "The Music Still Plays On", I was almost moved to tears. A high point of my past 15 years of musical theater.

Posted: 2/8/05 at 2:59pmKAREN MORROW???????? I Luvs me some Karen Morrow!!! Thank god she found a role! She should have been a huge star - I've never heard such a clear belt in my life! Listen to her sing "I Had a Ball!" and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about!

She is a song dance girl - I couldn't see her doing the dramatics as well, but I'd LOVE to hear her sing "Mother's Gonna Make Things Fine"
Karen Morrow was fantastic in the reading though - and such a sweetheart!
