There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

New Line does not have a director. They do have a script nobody likes. They are waiting to see if Rent and Producers flop as well as Phantom before they go foward. Move on!

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Yes there is! It's got Rikki Lake, Sonny Bono, and Divine in it, duhh.

*teehee*

Yes, there's THAT movie. I think this person is referring to the stall in proposed-production of a musical for-screen adaptation.

Let's hope RENT and Producers don't flop, because I'd very much like to see Hairspray on the silver-screen at SOME point.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Is a film version really necessary? Not really. Especially now that the original directors have left the project.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

They won't flop. The Producers had a very modest budget (I believe RENT did as well). So they should at the very least make a profit.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

I hope Producers and Rent are better films than Phantom was (sorry for those who enjoyed it) I thought that film was missing something, and decided to take too many liberties. But I would hope with a Hairspray movie they would get the originals to do it, rather than what I heard (John Travolta as Edna...shiver).

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Why are they making movie musicals out of all the musicals I don't like?

And then theres Phantom which I like, but then the movie sucked.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

bschneid76, I completely agree.

I enjoyed Phantom, but in my mind it didn't compare to the show.

OTOH, I loved the movie of Chicago. I still prefer it to the show.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Good. A film of HAIRSPRAY without Divine would be pointless.

I also liked the movie CHICAGO more than the show, mostly because the way it's presented.

I hate how people think they know everything.

You state this as a fact but you are wrong.

The movie is still in the works.

Just because you don't get daily updates on who is being considered for director, screenwriter and such doesn't mean that the movie will NOT be made. Got it?

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

I don't know... I'm a little torn on this. I saw the show, and I thought that Good Morning Baltimore and You can't Stop the Beat were amazing - of course, then there were all those lousy songs in between. I like it, but Rent and even The Producers will make better films.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

I think seriously the movie all depends on how well movies like Producers and Rent do because its a tough market now, what with Phantom not being the biggest of hits, and the declining intrest in musical movies with remakes of Damn Yankees and Guys and Dolls sidelined so long ago.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

I didn't realize that they'd cancelled the Damn Yankees remake. Did you hear about the all black casting for Damn Yankees set in the Negro Leagues?

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Don't you guys think Hairspray is a very theatrical show? I can't imagine "Mamma, I'm a Big Girl Now" or the energy when Tracy appears on stage singing "You Can't Stop the Beat" transferring well on stage, specially without its original creative team. Maybe Rob Marshall will be able to make something good out of it but without Harvey Fierstein, Jerry Mitchell, and Jack O'Brien, I don't think the film would be that good.
I hope that if they cancel the project it's not because The Producers and Rent flop; The Producers' trailer is pretty funny so I'm pretty sure it'll work even for non-musical theater fans, I'm not so sure about Rent but I know all of us who support this show, Larson, the actors, and movie musicals will see it as many times as our budget allows us so it'll work.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

You simply must trust that there are a few show business professionals on this board who have real jobs in the industry and know what's going on. The Hairspray movie project is on terminal hold. It will only be reactivated if Rent and The Producers are big, big hits. Zadan and Meron have many other items on their plate and the project so far has been nothing but a giant headache. So you can stop fantasizing about it and move on to fantasizing about Altar Boyz or Wicked or some other theatrical property. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy yourself.

re: There is no HAIRSPRAY movie

Pfft. Since when does a few months from concept to director announcement qualify as Development Hell? The Rent movie- now that thing went through Development Hell. When you run out of fingers and toes to count the different directors, scripts, and heck, script doctors attached to a project, you know that's a movie that might never be made. Way to leap to conclusions.
