are the ones that I'm going to see when I visit in a week:

Lend Me a Tenor, Red, Race, La Cage Aux Folles, and then I'm deciding between Next Fall and Fela! Which should I go see?

I highly enjoyed Next Fall. I didn't enjoy Fela! as much but can see where someone might.

Next Fall. Unless you want to see something bad. Then go see Fela.

Well, the reason I was thinking about Fela! was because I LOVE Passing Strange. Am I totally off for thinking I will like Fela because I like Passing Strange?

i loved 'passing strange' and i love 'fela!'. they aren't that similar, other than that they both have much more contemporary "non broadway" scores and they both are highly theatrical pieces. i would recommend 'fela!'. i have a feeling you will enjoy it. sadly, you will find a lot of 'fela!' haters on this board because: (a) it's not "traditional" broadway (whatever that is) and (b) although it's upbeat, it's not frivolously fun. some also claim it lacks character development and a book, which is just isn't true.

you can sample the cast recording on their website. give it a listen a see what you think.
fela's website

"the stage too must experiment - with ideas, with the psychological relationship of men and women, with speech and rhythm forms, with dance and movement, with color and light - or it must and should become a museum product. in an age of terrific implications as to wealth and poverty, as to the function of government, as to peace and war, as to the relation of the artist to all these forces, the theatre must grow up. the theatre must become conscious of the implications of the changing social order, or the changing social older will ignore, and rightly, the implications of the theatre." - hallie flanagan, director of the federal theatre project

I hated FELA, but not for those reasons. I just did not like it. It's not for everyone. I definitely agree with whoever suggested listening to the cast recording samples. It's three hours of that pounding against your eardrums.

Plus a twenty minute anecdote about taking a crap.

yero: did you not like it because of the smell of weed? we all your aversion to it...

just teasing. of course, people don't like it for different reasons, but those are the two i've heard the most.

See FELA. It is a one of a kind production and it's incredible.

NEXT FALL is good, but there's nothing you can't get by just reading the play, if push comes to shove.

I have not seen Fela but from listening to the cast album it does not seem anything like Passing Strange, which I loved. If you are a fan of AfroBeat music then go see Fela.

You can listen to the cast album here:

I haven't seen Fela! or Next Fall yet (although I really want to), but you are going to really enjoy RED. It's brilliant. One of the best plays I've seen in years. Absolutely mind-blowing!

Here's my two cents...if you're set on seeing either FELA or Next Fall, I'd say do Fela over Next Fall. However if you're not set on seeing them, bag them both and go pay to see A Little Night Music at whatever price is available. The rest of your line up is a good selection of shows.

Fela was the right choice. It's original, audacious, and enthralling. Next Fall ain't.
