Mister Matt said: "The actual running joke was that they talked about him but the audience never heard or saw him. "
False.

We only saw glimpses of his body but we never saw his face. Same as Karen Walker's husband Stan on WILL & GRACE. Niles' wife Maris on FRASIER was only mentioned (never heard nor seen). Heard but never seen were: Charlie on CHARLIE'S ANGELS and Howard's mom on THE BIG BANG THEORY.

It seems like the scene may only have been available on DVD, but in the same episode where we saw his body, we saw his face (though it was in profile and somewhat out-of-focus). Though I don't recall him really speaking.

These sort of musical parodies are common at comedy venues or low-rent, tiny theatres (Full House and Saved by the Bell both have musical parodies running in NYC).
They're not meant to be even close to Broadway-caliber. They're just for laughs. Heck, this production is BYOB.

If it's cleverly done, like Silence!, then it could be good. If it's lame, like The Brady Bunch Musical and countless others, then it won't be. It's all in the execution and no one would expect high art.

the next door neighbor from Home Improvement you never saw his face (I think it was maybe revealed in the last episode, I can't remember exactly). I feel like Gayle Gergich was never meant to be shown and only talked about on Parks & Rec, but they later cast Christie Brinkley.
